With Extra Security, City Welcomes Navy For Fleet Week
MAY 22ND, 2002
In light of recent warnings about more terrorist attacks, the city and the Coast Guard are fortifying security measures for "Fleet Week.
After sailing in a parade under the Verrazano Bridge and around the tip of Manhattan, saluting the World Trade Center site as they pass, 20 warships, including one from Canada and one from Denmark, and 6,000 sailors will dock on the West Side of Manhattan Wednesday for the annual celebration of Naval services, now in its 15th year.
The public will be invited onboard the ships during their weeklong stay, until May 28. This is the first time the Navy has invited the public onboard any of its ships since September 11. Special tours of the ships will be given to firefighters, police officers and others who helped with the rescue, recovery and cleanup at the World Trade Center site.
All visitors will be screened with airport-like security, and the NYPD will have checkpoints set up on area bridges. The Coast Guard has also instituted several restrictions on non-naval vessels.
Boats cannot come closer than 100 yards to moving naval ships, and they must stay at least 200 yards away from docked ships. Private vessels must also stay at least 150 yards from the United Nations and Ellis and Liberty islands and least 25 yards from all bridges, piers and tunnels.
We've been dealing very closely with the federal authorities, with the Naval Investigative Service, with the Navy itself, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Tuesday. I think we are prepared for any eventuality.
The parade of ships begins around 10:30 a.m.

My advice to our boys in the Navy: Beware of prostitutes with Adam's Apples.

I had plans to take our exchange student into NYC on Friday for some more sightseeing before I knew it was Fleet Week. Should I take an attractive, tall, blonde 19 year old Swedish girl into the city now????

We walked down there and watched just about the whole procession. Very touching when each ship paused by the WTC (which is a couple of blocks inland) and everyone on board stood at attention and saluted. I took a lot of pictures and can put them up later, if anyone might be interested.

If you are tall, she'll be interested!! She's a bright girl and has been here in high school for a year! Graduates in a month and then goes back to a little island off the mainland!
