Governor Huckabee cruised to an easy Republican primary victory today and it appeared Jimmie Lou Fisher would be his Democratic opponent in the general election.
The state treasurer held a big lead in early returns from the Democratic race for governor. Two others were on the Democratic ballot, but only one of them was actually still in the race.
With 14 percent of the precincts reporting, Fisher had 65 percent of the vote and former Prosecutor Joe Holmes of Pine Bluff had 27 percent. Jim Billie of Little Rock, whose name was still on the ballot after he dropped out in April, had eight percent.
With 245 of 2,709 percent of precincts reporting, unofficial returns showed Huckabee leading Doyle Cannady 86 percent to 14 percent.
Senator Hutchinson beats Duggar
Incumbent US Senator Tim Hutchinson has won the Republican Party nomination to the seat he now holds. With returns reported from 14 percent of the state's precincts, Hutchinson held an 80 percent-20 percent lead over his Republican challenger, state Representative Jim Bob Duggar of Springdale.
The Republican primary was the first political contest for Hutchinson since he divorced his wife and married a former aide after winning office in 1996 on a family values platform. Hutchinson had the backing of President Bush, Vice President Cheney and the national GOP.
Duggar, like Hutchinson a Christian conservative, said he followed God's plan in entering the race -- but he the two-term state representative said the Lord did not make any promises about the outcome.
Hutchinson will face Democrat Mark Pryor in the November general election. The state attorney general drew no opposition in the Democratic Primary.

Mark Pryor was a lot more conservative when he was a law student in Fayetteville. He's a nice guy, but since he entered his career as a professional politician, he has become increasingly more liberal.

"Jim Billie of Little Rock, whose name was still on the ballot after he dropped out in April, had eight percent." What is it with the Dems? They vote for the dead, and manage to get the dead to vote for them.

Can you spell Majority Tiny Tom? That is what every stay at home vote means. Tell your kids about family values, but, please think about the cost to them if the tiny one controls the Senate for two more years.

Way to go Gov., strike up the band! :)

Tim Hutchinson MAY not have lived up to the family values issues that he proclaimed in 1996. I do not know the details of his divorce from his wife Donna. I suspect that Mark Pryor will receive the votes of at least 50,000 conservatives who will punish Hutchinson for his "family values" shortcomings. Many other natural supporters of Hutchinson will have absolutely no enthusiasm for his candidacy as they did six years ago. I would bet on Pryor, given the Democrat nature of bILLclinton's AR; however, Huckabee is likely to win reelection, and if his margin is large enough, he might pull Hutchinson through in a squeaker. So even if the GOP were to take the SD seat, the AR seat is much in jeopardy.

You mean you don't know about votes loaded into the machines before election day!!!! I guess when he died they stopped adding votes and just left those in the machine.
