This was actually on the Phil Hendrie show on Tuesday.
The caller commented on it, and said that they bomber had seen "Fight Club" one too many times.

That's right! Everybody had superior smiles yesterday when told, like, sure, isn't it past your nap time?

but now he's shown us all "the way"....through smiley faces we can transcend death. and if we blow up those accursed mail boxes, the government can no longer control our thoughts and desires.
....duuude, we know the way. (chuckle) that's cool.

The name rings a bell, but I can't place it.

Check here:
CNN.
The bozo was making happy faces with his pipe bombs. Asked his mother if he would go to jail for this. Lah---lalalalala----lah-lalalalala (How does that song go?)

Some FReeper, and I don't have a link, mentioned that the locations seemed to be forming a smiley face about the time or before the CO one was found. "Smiley face" comment was made on FR first--long before Luke John was apprehended.

Excerpt from MSNBC.com's current story on Helder:
RENO, Nev., May 9 The parents of accused mailbox pipe bomber Luke Helder arrived in Reno Thursday to see their son for the first time since his arrest. Meanwhile, new questions were raised about the 21-year-old college students mental state, as a police officer who was present during Helders arrest said the suspect told officers he picked the locations for the bombs in an effort to create a geographical representation of a happy face.

"Some FReeper, and I don't have a link, mentioned that the locations seemed to be forming a smiley face about the time or before the CO one was found. I'd like to give credit where it's due.
