A lesson for GOP panderers
TownHall.com ^ | Wednesday, May 8, 2002 | by Michelle Malkin

The Republican Party needs to hire Andrew Smith to help shape its message on immigration. At 18, this senior at Novato High School in Marin County, Calif., has more common sense and cojones than the hapless panderers in the GOP who have thrown their principles to the wind.

Smith made headlines last week after blowing the whistle on school officials who attacked an article he wrote about illegal immigration for his student newspaper late last year. His message was simple: Illegal immigrants are law-breakers who should be sent back to their native countries, where they should wait in line like everyone else.

"Our country is extremely generous and possesses some of the greatest opportunities in the world," Smith wrote. "For these reasons people from all over the globe have come here in order to better themselves through the freedoms that only America provides. To insure that our generosity and opportunities aren't wasted by those that seek refuge inside our borders, certain laws must be enforced. These laws are there to protect and benefit the citizens of our country."

He continued: "In order for a person to become a citizen they have to comply with a few very reasonable requirements. The first and most obvious is that you have to speak, write, and understand simple English. Second, you cannot have any felony convictions. You must also show that you are not an immoral person. . . . You must pass a test on American history and culture, and you must be patriotic. . . . There should be no tolerance for anyone to be an illegal immigrant. If you can't comply with our requirements, then stay out of our country."

The day after the article was published, the principal and district superintendent sent a letter to Novato High parents and students stating that Smith's opinion piece "negatively presented immigrants in general and Hispanics in particular." (Notice the omission of the word "illegal." Welcome to the smear tactics of ethnic mau-mauers, Andrew.) Student letters called Smith "ignorant" and "racist." He was publicly reprimanded at two school forums.

"I am not a racist," Smith responded calmly. "I am a journalism student who wanted to stimulate thought and discussion among the student body." Smith took the school to court last week for chilling his free-speech rights. He refuses to back down from his opinions in the face of ethnic interest group pressure.

Republican leaders, on the other hand, continue to bend over backward to appease the pro-illegal alien crowd:

-- Last month, chief White House strategist and Hispanic vote groveler Karl Rove lambasted immigration reform advocate Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., for criticizing the administration's open-door Mexican border policies.

-- Last week, New York Gov. George Pataki announced his support for legislation to permit illegal immigrants to pay lower in-state tuition rates at the state's public universities.

-- This week, Republican National Committee Chairman Marc Racicot announced a $1 million television campaign in Spanish designed to woo Hispanic voters. The 30-minute newsmagazine will air on the nation's two largest Spanish-language TV networks in Fresno, Calif., Miami, Denver, Las Vegas, Orlando, Fla., and Albuquerque, N.M. In addition, nearly 1,400 GOP "team leaders" have been assigned as chief Hispanic panderers, and many more are undergoing Spanish language training through Berlitz courses.

-- And over the weekend in his weekly radio address, President Bush again pushed Congress to pass Section 245(i), a mini-amnesty that rewards tens of thousands of aliens who illegally crossed the border or overstayed their visas -- while millions of law-abiding people around the world wait patiently for green cards to become available.

Are Republican leaders so afraid of being labeled "racists," and so desperate for votes, that they'll continue to sell out their commitment to the rule of law -- and our national security with it? If an 18-year-old boy can stand up and communicate a sensible and unapologetic message to foreign residents -- speak English, respect our laws, love our country, or stay out -- why can't the GOP?

There is nothing wrong with this, in and of itself. However, the rest of the article is right on target.

I disagree. I agree entirely with all of your positions regarding immigrints. However, it is the job of the RNC to elect Republican candidates. The RNC should not throw away votes that the Democrats will take over language. Better to win those votes, to elect more Republicans, to stem the flow. Of course, the GOP will never do that, but I was just stating that simply going for hte votes in spanish does not bother me in and of itself.

The present day Republican Party has finally become part and parcel of the Democrat Party. It no longer has any significant semblance left of the once Grand Old Party. They are truly Republicrat's. Talk about two peas in a pod.

If an 18-year-old boy can stand up and communicate a sensible and unapologetic message to foreign residents -- speak English, respect our laws, love our country, or stay out -- why can't the GOP?

Yes, why indeed not!?

Carl Rove is an unprincipled unmitigates disaster. A complete political hack/whore who only cares about getting people elected that have GOP appended to their party affiliation tag.
As far as what GOP stands for well it stands for ah er um well it stands for ----------

I don't know who is worse Powell or Rove

Umm, the GOP has stood for and ought to stand for social conservatism and against anti-Mexican and anti-Catholic xenophobic bigotry. I listened to Tancredo for as long as I could stand yesterday during Special Orders. He seemed to be saying that he had recently visited the Coronado National Forest in Arizona and found that there was litter, actual litter in the forest which he was able to (with the help of the psychic friends network?) identify as originating with undocumented Mexicans (lions and tigers and bears, oh my!) and, and, and he just knows that these undocumented Mexicans were carrying drugs in their backpacks.

The young journalism student ought to get the benefit of the doubt for being well-meaning. Michelle Malkin ought to know better. The "philosophical" ancestors of Tancredo and the Federation for American Immigration Reform (ludicrously acronymed FAIR) resisted Irish immigration (slaves of the Pope in Rome and drunks and not at all like us), Chinese immigration (Godless pagans who smoke opium and have criminal gang wars and besides they don't speak English), Italians (all dominated by the mafia when they are not slaves of the Pope, etc., and besides they don't speak English)), Jews (political radicals from Eastern Europe who don't believe in Jesus Christ, eat Christian babies, and besides don't speak English and they run Murder, Inc.), etc., etc., etc. Some of them, Winthorp, actually drink alcoholic beverages and very few agree with Darwin. And worse yet, these immigrants are suspected of an intent to have children. Mark my words, Winthorp, if we don't do something, America will be finished by 1910!

And perhaps most ludicrous of all is the unsolicited advice we receive from one Peter Brimelow whose book Alien Nation is the bible of this bunch when they aren't poring over the Protocols of the Elders of Zion in their spare time. Herr Brimelow, himself a native of England and an immigrant, who is married to Frau Brimelow, herself a native of Canada and an immigrant, had produced one little Brimelow, that is one little Brimelow before the publication of his book which, as he said, was designed to see to it that America would look like little blond, blue-eyed Brimelow in 50 years. After all why come here if you have to share the country with people unlike the Brimelows? Of course, if they don't want to share, they can always go home to England or Canada or wherever. I too have ancestry from England and from Canada but I will not fold like a cheap suit over the fact that socially conservative reinforcements are arriving from south of the border.

I am also really amazed at anyone in this country citing the rule of law for anything whatsoever, as though it still existed after the sixty or so years of constitutional carnage perpetrated by the SCOTUS which is responsible, inter alia for 40+ million child murders courtesy of Herod Blackmun, his compliant accomplices and colleagues and Roe vs. Wade.

Pandering always leads downhill.

Yup -- it's a race to the bottom. Question is, who is running, and who is cheering? The parasites (politicians) or the citizens?

When the wheels finally come off the GOP will be as responsible as the Left. Gaggle of nutless wonders.

They already are, the wheels went to the scrap yard years ago.

Is this the kid who is suing his school because they won't publish his editorials without a countering one? Sorry, but I strongly disagree with the kid. He has a right to free speech, but no right to free publish.

I also disagree with those who object to spanish ads. There are a number of legal immigrants & citizens who are more comfortable speaking spanish. Should they learn English? YES! Should we refuse to accept their votes until they become fully comfortable in English? NO! As long as the ads argue for a conservative view (and not for increased federal spending for education, or why free political speech needs to be regulated, etc), then I have no objection.

The Republicans aren't too smart if they can't look at how the votes along the border and in California are going. All the ethnic pandering in the world isn't going to help them win elections. Bush trying to appeal to illegals only hurts him with legal Hispanics who want jobs and see the democrats as more helpful in that.

Stop pandering to the illegals

The race between Perry and Sanchez is a good example ---Perry just isn't going to learn Spanish fast enough to catch up to a native speaker like Sanchez who attacked his Hispanic Democrat opponent even for not speaking Spanish well enough ---and that went over big with Hispanics. Perry can't dole out money fast enough to the Texas border counties to catch up with what Sanchez is promising them. Perry isn't going to win the Hispanic vote.

New York Gov. George Pataki announced his support for legislation to permit illegal immigrants to pay lower in-state tuition rates at the state's public universities.

This is the most assinine 'policy' I have heard of. A US citizen from another state has to pay out of state tuition but an illegal gets to pay in state. Say WHAT?

I believe I would like to see that bill that Pataki is backing before I make a comment on it. It seems that sometimes people interpret things to push their agenda.

I am getting really tired of the anti-immigrant rant. Should we prosecute illegals? Yes. But this constant Mexican bashingn is driving me crazy.

The Republican Party should make an effort at an Hispanic outreach, and I am glad they are doing so. I want those who are able to vote to understand the benefits of capitalism, self-reliance, and equal opportunity. I do not want to write off the new Americans as democrats because of the misguided intentions of those who think it is pandering to ask for their votes.

When people campaign in Polish neighborhoods they eat the food and say a few words in Polish. The same thing happens in Italian neighborhoods. When those people were new citizens, one or two generations ago, the democrats had the brains to go into the neighborhoods and speak the language. Those ethnic neighborhoods voted democrat for many years.

There is NOTHING wrong with what Racicot is doing. Carl Rove has a pretty good track record, despite what those who criticize him say (and at least one is not a Bush supporter, and that is a fact) and he is who the President has chosen to help with the political strategy.

Regarding Pataki, I want to see what that bill actually is. I heard Michelle as a commentator on a show recently and she did not have some of her facts correct. I was not particularly impressed.

I think that it may be that many in the GOP are in-line with the globalist agenda, and solidifying a culture is seen as being too nationalistic. I know it's crazy, but this is an outright possibility.

Pataki, NYS Panderer-in-Chief, has stated that illegal immigrants should be granted in-state tuition rates at state run institutions.

If they can't support and defend the constitution, they can get the hell out of office.

Exactly where in the Constitution does it say that it is forbidden to speak to US citizens in a language they can understand?

There is something wrong with it if they are to address people in the US who should have a working knowledge if English.

Please specify where the word 'English' appears in the Copnstitution.
