Ozzy's True Stripes
Reason.com ^ | May 7 2002 | Sara Rimensnyder

Posted on 05/07/2002 1:09:42 PM PDT by Senator Pardek

After this weekend, we all have new reason to worship Ozzy Osbourne. While hamming it up as one of the stars of the annual glitzfest known as the White House Correspondents' Association dinner, the heavy metal papa was asked what message he wanted to pass on to the president.

Some of Hollywood's beautiful people, puffed up with self-importance (among other things), would have felt the need to twitter portentously about their current cause celèbre.

Not Ozzy. He's his own cause celèbre, and all he wants is dual-citizenship. " I want to be American," he called out. "America is the coolest place on the face of the Earth. You've got freedom of speech. You've got McDonald's."

Clearly, Osbourne's already an American at heart: Only a true Yankee spirit could be at once so patriotic and so gloriously self-interested. Of course, this being the outspoken, opinionated U.S.A., not everyone agrees. Lynne Cheney reportedly joined the short list of naysayers after the dinner. "He's hardly someone we should be applauding... not a role model, I am rather embarrassed."

Ozzy's not. Nor should he be.

Thanks for your take on it. It had not escaped me who invited him. Should lay to rest any doubts about her for all time.

Either Ozzy stole your girlfriend in the 70's or ate one of your housepets in the 80's and you are still holding a grudge.

Definitely the comeback of the day!

I think she invited him for the sole purpose of being disruptive, everybody was amking like Bush and Ozzy were friends and that Bush invited Ozzy. i think Bush was trying to make the best of a difficult situation.

Great shows - MTV & Oz suck compared to those. I watch the old reruns on TVLand: HappyDays, Andy Griffith, Leave it to Beaver, Bev. Hillbilly's - man those were great shows!

Nowadays, all the comedy has to be vulgar, sexual, and have at least one fruitloop running around the set. Sad, ain't it?

They can keep their Oz-Man, I'll take Pa Cartwright any day!

Oh yeah, the real OZ on tv was Ozzie & Harriet! (Yes, I feel old saying that)

I would agree with your comment. Let me express this thought though. When people have a blemish on their face, they'll invariable touch it or point to it. Usually the blemish is something that other people would completely ignore if they person would let them. Somehow it seems to be human nature to either subconciously or inadvertantly do this. Bush's comments about Ozzie seemed to mimic this human trait. If Bush hadn't mentioned Ozzie, I doubt if many would have even noticed that he was there. This isn't a huge gaff on Bush's part, but I do think it was a mistake none the less.

Yet *another* reason for me to like Bush... he's got a solid sense of humor and proportion, unlike our local FR Taliban contingent...

No, you either don't have cable or you're spending all your time on here.

Ohhh! Someone needs to get off their high-horse
now, don't they? Did someone die and make you the judge
of the rest of us, hmmmm? You know, you seem to always
find the opportunity to connect Bush to someone else's
behavior, usually bad. Why is that? All he has to do
is to be nice to someone or connect with someone you
don't approve of, and all of a sudden, he's just as bad
as them. For heaven's sake, get off the high horse,
and cut the lectures, huh! We are not all children who
need your 'approval' to do anything, or to admire some-
one. You're acting like you're our "daddy" or our
"old maid aunt" or something!
