Quite a bit of driving, 6 to 8 hours round trip, then add stopping time to plant them. It may indeed be more than one person, especially since people are finding them all in a short period.

They are looking for the perps and don't know if it is connected to terrorism.
Hmm, gee let me think about that one for a while. Guess they don't want to get anyone excited over the deal...
"Maybe if we don't say it's connected to terrorism, the fact that people are randomly receiving pipe bombs in their mail will give the Post Office better PR."

From the Telegraph-Herald, Dubuque County, Iowa:
Bomb planted in mailbox injures postal worker
SAGEVILLE, Iowa - A U.S. Postal Service mail carrier was seriously injured Friday afternoon when a bomb planted inside a Sageville mailbox exploded. Another bomb exploded in rural Elizabeth, Ill., and authorities discovered an undetonated bomb in a Farley mailbox.
Officials have not released the identity of the postal worker.
Around 12:30 p.m. the Dubuque County Sheriffs Department was notified of the bomb explosion on Rupp Hollow Road - the mailbox of David Holl, 11803 Ledgewood Drive, according to neighbor Myo Boyer, of 11983 Boyer Road.
Boyer said she nearly opened her neighbors mailbox, but paused after she saw something suspicious inside.
I saw a string, one of those 9-volt batteries, and a coil inside there. So I shut it up real quick, Boyer said. I didnt know what a bomb looks like.
Eyewitnesses at the scene said the mail carrier later opened the mailbox from the passenger side of a sport utility vehicle, and the bomb detonated. The explosion severely injured the mail carriers arm, eyewitnesses said. The explosion drilled a shotgun-sized hole in the door of the vehicle.
The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms were called to the site Friday afternoon, a Dubuque County Deputy confirmed. Law enforcement officials cordoned off the area, awaiting federal investigators.
Dubuque County Law enforcement officials confirmed another mail bomb in rural Farley. An official with the department said that bomb did not detonate.
Donna Millwright, a U.S. Postal carrier in Dubuque County for 22 years, stopped her vehicle on the side of North U.S. 52, when she heard the news of the explosion, waiting for official orders on how to proceed.
I dont want to get blown up, Millright said.
Nothing like this has ever happened, Millwright said. Ive seen plenty of things in mailboxes, but never a bomb.
Lets hope there arent anymore, Millwright said.
Jo Daviess County, Ill., officials report a pipe bomb exploded in a mailbox in rural Elizabeth Friday afternoon. Officials were investigating reports of pipe bomb explosions in Carroll and Whiteside counties as well.
We would ask that everyone use extra caution when checking your mailboxes and report any foreign objects in or around mailboxes, said Jo Daviess County Sheriff Steve Allendorf.

This woman could have kept the postal worker from getting injured!

Fox said the pipe bombs come with some anti-american or anti-government message...
Knowing this part of Iowa and Illinois, probably it's some leftover Vietnam-era Trotskyite.
