Tune in to Radio Free Republic tonight at 9 P.M. Eastern Time. "On Target" host John Bender will have Dennis Jackson as his guest talking about arming pilots.
Mr. Jackson is a captain for a major airline, flying Airbus series aircraft. He is also an NRA certified firearms instructor with a concealed carry permit in Arizona. He authored the original petition to arm airline pilots right after 9/11. The petition was delivered to Congress and was mentioned in the congressional debate of the law that allows pilots to be armed.
Mr. Jackson is on the national leadership team of the Airline Pilots Security Alliance (APSA). The group was formed after 9/11 specifically for the purpose of arming pilots as commonsense safety measure to defend against another 9/11 style attack.
This will be a show you will not want to miss.

Curiously, many in Congress favor the provision to arm pilots; but the Bush Administration is one of the leading opponents, according to ABC News reports.

Sounds like it will be a good show.
I make two primary arguments in favor of allowing pilots to arms themselves: First, many airline pilots are ex-military, which gives them a bit more qualification than they might otherwise hold, at least in the eyes of most folks. Secondly, and by far the most important point however, is how the federal government are such control freaks that they won't allow civilian pilots discretion under arms, but are willing to authorize a jet fighter to shoot down the entire aircraft if deemed expedient.
That, to employ the vernacular, is nuts.

I would love to listen in, but so far, Radio Free Republic does not accommodate Mac users.

I will be working this PM so if you get through with a call please let em know I am 110% behind arming the cockpit crew with either small snub nose revolvers or semi-automatics (SA or DA) with modern frangable ammunition in .357SIG or Magnum, or 45 ACP. This would go along with a use of force policy that begins at the cockpit door for those forcing entry.
I don't want or even advocate cockpit crew leaving the cockpit to "police" disruptive passnegers. In such a situation , get the AC on the ground ASAP and let the dipsh*t who caused the ruckas pay for the disruption and added cost's both criminally and financally.
This along with the random placement of Air Marshal teams of three or more and or the knowledge that passengers will gang tackle , hog tie and beat like a red headed stepchild anyone who even suggest's violence or destruction of a flight for the purpose of hijack , sucide or just plain old disruption for their version of fun......
I as will a whole lot of my friends and family will not fly commercial untill these safety measures are taken and the gestapo like tactics in the airports is stopped. I won't even go near an airport aka "Fort" these days to pick up anyone.....take a cab and I'll pick up the tab but I won't even get near one of those socialist experiments.........
Stay Safe !

Yeah, it looks like Congress is going to have to force the Bush administration to take this common sense safety measure.

It is not just the aircraft that is at risk. It is everyone who works in or visits a tall building. If the pilots had guns on 9/11 the twin towres would still be there and more than 3,00 people would still be alive.

Not quite the choir. After reading some threads and opinions on this topic, i've changed my mind. The most powerul argument to me was that if the Feds are ready to shoot down a plane, why can't the pilots have a 'shot' before that drastic resolution?

The most powerul argument to me was that if the Feds are ready to shoot down a plane, why can't the pilots have a 'shot' before that drastic resolution? The anti-Second Amendment radicals who are keeping planes and tall buildings unsafe, don't care about being reasonable, logical, or safe. They only care about their extreme agenda.

Hijackers won't stop until their chances of success are reduced to nothing.
The only two ways to do this are to be ready to shoot down the airliner, or put weapons in the cockpit. Everything else is secondary.

Is there going to be a call-in number for this show.
