Flames and smoke visible for 10 miles, acrid odors, no water, insufficient water to put it out and authorities plan to let it burn out. No word on casualties, started about 1am.

CNN Paula reporting with Chief Jack Williams of Houston Tx, fire dept: Warehouse and Tank farm system used to take BULK materials and package them for consumers.
Fire (liquid supply)is "contained" by dikes??
NO hydrants or piped water supply, just tanks for routine consumption. May take "days" to put out/burn out. Air monitoring underway, people in the direction (north) of smoke plume should stay indoors. No barbequeing today?the air might explode...

And all of those poor people in Houston were bustling around yesterday getting their cars inspected before the new inspection for auto emissions standards kicks in today! So much for cleaner air.

This is a little guy who made good. Don't be so quick to blame. If it is Jim's company it's in Friendswood not Pearland and he's wiped out.

On monday, nearly 400,000 homes and businesses in north Florida lost electric power for 8 hours or more due to a transformer meltdown.
Interestingly, rush hour traffic was smoother and faster than usual without the "benefit" of traffic lights and police. People in 6-lane roads voluntarily stopped to allow cross traffic to move. I saw one instance at a large intersection where drivers paused for the left turn traffic -- as if the lights were still working.
I attribute this to 9/11 and a changed attitude in Americans towards disasters.

Chemical plant explosion near Houston forces evacuations
05/01/2002 Associated Press
PEARLAND, Texas A Houston area chemical packing plant erupted in flames early Wednesday, with authorities evacuating about 100 people from their homes.
Residents near Third Coast Packaging were awakened when their windows rattled from several explosions at the plant, which includes a tank farm for storing chemicals.
A toxic chemical was involved in the fire, which involved nearly 100 tanks, Brazoria County sheriff's officers said. "There are petroleum products and oil on the premises along with brake fluid," said Martha Carr, a sheriff's dispatcher. "We don't know what exploded."
No injuries were reported. Firefighters were working to contain the blaze. Authorities said brake fluid and lighter fluid were manufactured at the Brazoria County plant, which included underground storage tanks.
The blasts were heard up to five miles from the plant. One resident told Houston radio station KTRH that thick, acrid smoke was drifting over his house from the plant. A woman who has lived near the factory for 20 years told KHOU-TV nothing like this had ever happened before.
The first alert to authorities came about 1 a.m., said Brazoria County emergency management staffers. The Red Cross set up a shelter for evacuated residents.
