Thong-Wearing Teens Kicked Out Of Dance
A group of parents are calling for the resignation of Rancho Bernardo High School's vice principal, claiming she enforced underwear checks at a school dance, 10News reported.
The dance occurred Friday and vice principal Rita Wilson turned away girls who were wearing thongs, the parent said.
Kim Teal is among the several parents angry with Wilson (pictured, right).
"First thing (my daughter) said when she got into the car was, 'Mom, it was horrible last night. You have to fight this,'" Teal told 10News.
According to parent Alane Garvik, girls who arrived at the dance wearing short skirts were immediately asked: "What kind of underwear do you have on?"
When Garvik's daughter red-facedly announced that she was wearing thong underwear she was told to "go home and put on appropriate underwear," according to Garvik.
Teal's daughter made it in and claims to have witnessed faculty lifting the skirts of girls to assure that the offending underwear was going nowhere near the dance floor.
"Well, I just saw ... a line of people and the vice principal, Mrs. Wilson, she was checking to see what the girls were wearing under their dresses. And she was literally lifting up their skirts and embarrassing them in front of everyone else," one student told 10News.
Parents and students have placed the blame on Wilson, for spearheading the thong underwear checks, even though there is nothing in the school dress code against them.
"It's not their right to know what kind of underwear these kids have," Garvik told 10News.
10News contacted school officials, who all declined to go on camera. But Principal Paul Gentle did say that he is "looking into the situation."
Parents are now asking for Wilson to resign.
Gentle said that even while enforcing the school dress code, it is not proper procedure to ask students what they are wearing underneath their clothes.
He told 10News that he plans to meet with parents sometime this week.

Agreed. If the thing wearing leads to inappropriate public displays, the school should step in. I just have a problem with executing a search at the door for underwear not in plain sight.Exactly. Like I said before, if a principal wants my daughter to raise her skirt so they can see if she's wearing a thong, then I've got a problem. It isn't obvious, which means there is no 'probable cause;' and if done with my daughter, I'm having charges pressed for child abuse and molestation.

Of course it is primarily the role of parents, but there are plenty of irresponsible parents out there. so this is viewed as intrusive because it requires lifting the skirt. what if the infraction was no bra and a sheer top, or say, bikini tops covering very little. would it be different then? is it NOT permissible for schools to have rules for dress that they can then enforce? I think a fair standard is, if it's in plain view it's fair game. IOW, if the skirt is flying up and exposing "sensitive areas", the school should take action. (Admittedly, I don't know how short the skirts in question were, so that could be the case here.) But if the thong underwear were not in plain view upon entry, I wouldn't go looking for them if I were an administrator.

" While I would be against the school actually raising the skirts of girls as they entered the dance, I would be totally supportive of them sending the little tramps home if they flash on the dance floor."
No, you aren't a nazi. You are a good parent in not letting your kids be lemmings.

but, what if, as postulated here, there had been incidents at previous school dances that indicate it had been a problem in the past? i think that is highly likely. And, as i said, i was just last week at a jr high dance at my kids school, and there was inappropriate dress that was spoken to by the principal. i think that once a problem makes itself manifest, the administration takes steps to preempt it. The aforementioned one shoulder tops that Sr. Theresa commented on last week, will likely be outlawed prior to the next dance.

This can be handled on the dance floor, don't ask to see the thongs at the door...and if it is exposed on the dance floor-automatic ejection back home to change.

Rancho Bernardo is an upscale community, very close to wear the Van Dams live. What the heck is going on up there?

I am with you on this one. I doubt if the parents could prevail in litigation. Be that as it may, how can anyone think that a girl would wear a thong, unless she had every intention of showing it sometime during the dance. Get real !!

So we are defining the bet as winning a civil suit, not the firing of the teacher? That's how HG defined it originally in post #68 - I didn't set the terms, he did. But it's a sucker's bet - the parents and the students have virtually no chance of winning a civil suit if one is brought.
Like I said before, I still don't think it was a good idea for the school officials to do this, but it was almost certainly legal for them to do so. And the parents will find out as much if and when they try to file suit.

I predict 500 posts by midday eastern, and 1,000 by tonight..

The length of the skirt is what dictated the probable exposure....are you saying that you wouldn't get a small child out of the street, until you actually saw a car heading toward him? Are you saying a short skirt is an indicator of imminent danger, as the sight of a child in the street would be?
To: general_re
What about suing the school system and winning, is that proposition still on the board?
To: NittanyLion
I am saying a Short skirt coupled with less than adequate underwear, at a DANCE, is an indicator that there may be a nudity problem.

So you're insinuating that every girl or woman who wears a thong is a slut? uh oh! ;)
