HEADLINE: Waterloo police to hold second gun buyback
DATELINE: WATERLOO, Iowa
BODY:
A successful gun buyback program last year has prompted officials to sponsor another event in an attempt to get more guns off the streets.
The police department and the Waterloo Housing Authority are offering $50 for unwanted handguns, rifles and shotguns this weekend during the city's second gun buyback event. Officers will accept guns at the National Cattle Congress's pavilion building from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
Weapons should be unloaded, said Capt. Eric Gunderson.
Pellet guns, BB guns, black powder and non-working weapons will not be accepted.
People handing in guns get the money, no questions asked. They will not be asked to identify themselves.
The firearms will be checked through a national computer database. Stolen weapons will be returned to the rightful owners, Gunderson said.
Remaining firearms will be destroyed unless they are classified as antiques under state law.
Money for the program comes from a $25,000 U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grant.
The city's first buyback netted 100 guns in less than 30 minutes.
We are sunk.
Of course not. The new facial recognition cameras will do the job just fine. If you go, where a ski mask.
My thoughts, exactly. What a great little business oppotunity. But then the PD would probly shut you down for being better at business than they are. Private citizens are almost always better at business than political bodies.
Either that or someone should tell them to take their expensive guns to the next gun show and get real money for them. All those guns will not get destroyed. I know cops that always filter out the extremely valuable ones, and keep them for themselves.
What a rip off.
Bet you could turn out a functional zip-gun for about $5, maybe less.
OOOOOooh nooooooooooo
I am no lawyer but so it seems to me.
What would happen if someone dropped a dime and reported that illegal trafficking is occurring at such-and-such a place, at such-and-such a time...to the BATF?
Yeah, I know; they would probably do nothing.
'Course, one could then give a press conference announcing that the allegation had been presented and that we await the BATF's response.
If the Mayor, Police Chief, D.A., et al are involved, they should be arrested.
Or so it seems to this engineer.

And then you might as well just board the cattle cars for the trip to the "showers"; why waste time?
End of "Gun Buybacks" in this city.
More "objectivity" from the AP: using the word successful as though it were an indisputable fact.
So, what do they mean by "successful"? Was there a sudden drop in violent crime right after the event? Did accidental firearm injuries go down? What?
