Al-Qaeda suspect wrestled from court

UPROAR broke out in a Frankfurt court yesterday at the start of the world’s first trial of al-Qaeda terror suspects after the 11 September atrocities in the US.
One of the suspects swore at the judge and called the court "Jewish" as he was wrestled to the cells by police officers.
The five men appearing before the court have been accused of plotting a bloodbath for the French city of Strasbourg from safe houses in Britain.
The timing of the trial is significant. Hours before the disturbance, German police said they had captured an al-Qaeda-linked terrorist involved with the murder of 16 people in Tunisia last week, ten of them Germans.
Yesterday’s hearing was stalled by the outburst from one of the accused. "You’re all Jews, I don’t want them, I don’t need them," cried the defendant, Lamine Maroni, 31, in Arabic. Maroni then started reciting verses from the Koran, swearing in a mixture of Arabic, German and French, and finally shouted out in English: "I don’t need this court - my God will defend me, he is my defender, not you."
As he was led out, he shouted to the press gallery: "You want to kill me, baby, don’t you?"
The disturbances were over a decision to allow television cameras into court to film the defendants for the first time in a trial of historical importance. The prosecution case is outlined in a 160-page indictment against Maroni and his accomplices - all accused of being al-Qaeda members who plotted mass murder at a Christmas market. It includes details of a chilling videotape of their intended victims.
"With God’s will, you will all go to hell," says the voiceover on the tape which was seized at a bomb-making factory in an apartment.
The statement came as the camera was trained on Christmas shoppers at the fair in Strasbourg, the seat of the European parliament.
The prosecution case against the suspects opened amid the biggest security for a criminal trial since the Red Army Faction hearings of the 1970s. Three of the suspects lived, were funded and received orders from al-Qaeda operatives in London and Sheffield, the indictment alleges.
Prosecutors said bomb-making supplies, including 64lb of potassium permanganate, aluminium powder, hydrogen peroxide, acetone, sodium and battery acid, along with handguns, 11 shotguns and two sub-machine guns, were seized from the Frankfurt safe houses by officers of the élite anti-terrorist G-9 units in December 2000.
Also discovered was an "unusual" detonator, similar to the type found on Richard Reid, the British subject currently awaiting trial in the US for allegedly trying to destroy an airliner in flight with explosives in his shoes.
The case highlights the intense co-operation between various European intelligence agencies and will show for the first time how an al-Qaeda terror cell operates, how it is funded, organised and armed.
It is claimed that four of the Islamic suspects planned to carry out the atrocity in late December 2000, but were arrested in Frankfurt just days before their mission was to take place. The fifth man, who is accused of membership of a terrorist organisation, was arrested on 4 April, 2001, in Karlsruhe, Germany.
According to prosecutors, the five trained at al-Qaeda camps between 1998 and 2000. They are Maroni, 31, Salim Boukhari, 30, Samir Karimou, 33, and Aeusobui Beandali, 23, all Algerians. Fouhad Sabour, 37, is an Algerian with French citizenship.
Prosecutors will tell Judge Karlheinz Zeiher that funds for the planned attack were funnelled through London, where Sabour, Boukhari and Maroni are said to have received instructions through a suspect wanted in the US for planning to bomb Los Angeles airport.

200 years from now, I want their children's children's children's children to cower and cringe in fear whenever they hear the sounds of jet engines overhead because their legends tell of fire from the sky.
I want them to hide in dark caves and holes in the earth, shivering with terror whenever they hear the roar of diesel engines because the tales of their ancestors talk about metal monsters crawling over the earth, spitting death and destruction.
I want their mothers to be able to admonish them with "If you don't behave, the Pale Destroyers will come for you", and that will be enough to reduce them to quivering obesience.
I want the annihilation to be so complete that their mythology will tell them of the day of judgment when the stern gods from across the sea .. the powerful 'Mericans .. destroyed their forefathers' wickedness.
These demons may be crazy but they are not stupid. They have to be exterminated.
Why is this item not on Drudge? Surely this trial is more important than somebody at the WashPost ruminating about bin Laden's whereabouts.
