Since Sept. 11 there has been growing skepticism toward the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, both as an ally that does not share our goals and values and as the key supplier of oil. To reinforce this position, some critics have maintained that we will soon not need Saudi oil, and that the kingdom's role of supplier of last resort can be replaced by a new energy colossus, Russia. This reasoning is essentially flawed and could bring disaster if followed to its logical consequences.

If the Saudis decide they must cut off the oil, then we do a few things. First, take some fat old men for helicopter rides. Explain to them the justified anger of the American people over events in New York, and the important mistakes in Saudi oil policy related to those justified concerns. Then let them exit the helicopter, at 1000 feet, over pavement. Be sure to get it on film for CNN.
Next, sell the country to Exxon for a 25% gross royalty. Use 5% of it to pay to wall off all the oil production areas from the rest of the country, with 400 yard belts of mines and razor wire, guarded by (air conditioned) US Marines. Offer half of the remaining royalities to any pro-US government that might arise outside the wire, and otherwise let them pound sand and revert to herding camels.
No more Saudi ownership of oil, therefore no more Saudi oil, therefore no more reliance on Saudi oil. Problem solved. For those in Palm Beach, the point is that military power is trump, and the Saudis own exactly what we say they own, and not one drop more. As long as they are tolerably pro-US, it is in our interest to let them profit from the use of the oil, since it spares us having to run the awful place. If they ever stop providing that service, then we stop needing them, and shortly thereafter they stop owning anything.
The price of oil is low, oil is readily available in any quantity you need. Would oil be any cheaper or would access to oil be any more secure if the military occupied the land as a colony or territory?
Don't look at just the cost of oil, many other factors are involved as well. Controlling a territory by force is very expensive, and next to impossible if the locals are not willing. Ask any empire.
Never happen. Even trying to make it happen is a waste of money almost as bad as the space station.
There is also suppose to be a Saudi Arabia's worth of oil in the oil sands of Canada. I think it pays off at about 25.00 per barrel.

BTW, the space stations real purpose is a learning experience about construction in space. It will pave the way for larger and more elaborate building which will make long range spacecraft a reality of the future. I am all for it! We need to get off this rotting apple we call home and sow our seed in the stars.

Correct, but BOTH (Russia and ANWR) are very bad for Saudis. Both promise cold winter and cold... shoulder to Arabs. With their friends and lobbyists.
The energy needed can only come from a cold fusion type of technology. We are working on it. Anti-matter is another possibility. It will come to pass and likely in the nick of time.
Do not make me laughing. Cold fusion proved to be a hoax (17 years old), probably unitentional. Anti-matter clusters were not found by astronomers in the visible part of Universe so far, forget the Earth.

Oh, my friends! You are both wrong. Wirestripper is too optimistc about non-existing things (cold fusion and anti-matter powerplants), while Biblewonk's denial mixes together time travel, interplantary travel, life in the universe and even evolution. Let's stay with reality.
Saudi oil is the topic. I think even new drilling at Alaska and/or extensive talks with Russia will force Arabs to change their position and attitude. And if first tankers with Russian and/or Alaskan oil start arriving, Arabs will beg USA to buy some of theirs.
The possibilities are ALMOST endless. But some things are not possible like um.... time travel and peace in the middle east. There are a lot of variables in play which might make this a really interesting summer for gas prices. I've heard a lot of freepers and non-freepers and down right liberals say that they would rather pay more for gas then buy it from countries that hate us. We could cut our consumption so fast in this country it would fill all oil producers foreign and domestic with dread. All we need is the right red white and blue motivation.
Leftists are really totally unaware of American psychology, aren't they? Tell an American what they CANNOT do, and you get a motivated person who will do ANYTHING to prove you wrong. I hope this article gets MUCH coverage, so that we can react as we always do, just for spite... and it would be really great if President Bush were spear-heading the initiative.
