You couldn't possibly know what my "base point" is.
I'm sharing what I observe out on the streets.
I understand how many would not like what I described. However, what it is is what it is.
OSHA is not welcome in many circles, nor DEA, nor BATF, and I do see a tendency in small jurisdictions to dislike anything that comes out of DC.
Specifically, if the INS came in and told everyone to watch out for illegal aliens THAT would create another grassroots underground railroad.
Interestingly, the folks who don't warm up to the mandates from Big Brother in WashDC are more hip about the Amendments, about the flag, more likely to go to church and to know the Pledge.
Best way to love America is to stay the hell out of big cities.
That last sentence was an editorial, of course.

Austin police say adding immigration duties would undo the trusting relationship local police have built with immigrants.

LOL! Next time, maybe Ozzy should go urinate on Austin PDs wall instead of the Alamo!

I was stating my base point, i.e., the reason I thought the article worth posting.

Well give it up then Austin...The border patrol has orders not to go looking for the illegals and if they happen to see one they may chase for only one mile..the last defense is the local cops..pity to see a once great nation give up it's sovereignity

Austin Police Assistant Chief Rudy Landeros says, "Our officers will not, and let me stress this because it is very important, our officers will not stop, detain, or arrest anybody solely based on their immigration status. Period."

Sounds like a conflict of interest to me. Someone check Rudy Landeros immigration status.

"The people of Austin are not going to go to the city council meetings and express their outrage en masse so what do they expect?"

Austin is a city that leans way to the LEFT. I lived there for a few years and this does not surprise me at all. Even considering the events of 9/11.

I may not like a lot of what they do, but I still follow the law to the best of my ability. If I want to change the system I group with others likeminded and we try to change the system. I DON'T like a lot of the things the feds do, but the only power they have is the power we the people give them from our lack of involvement. By posting here and alerting others, grouping with people locally, and voting we can stem the tide and get back to where we believe we should be. Will it ever get bad enough that we blatanly break the law to overthrow an opressive regime? Perhaps. But that time has not yet come. These officers have a duty to uphold the law and enforce it's rules. It is for a jury to decide if the law applies. They need to do their job.

So the Justice Department is allowing the local police to do their job, and the Austin Police won't do it. Can't blame Bush for that.

OK, I now see what your Base Point is.
Personally, I'm not likely to believe whatever a big city newspaper says is in the hearts and minds of cops. Or anyone else.
I think I read somewhere that folks in USC Law are doing research on what really goes on in law enforcement minds....the crooked cops, the overly zealous, the gun plants, the lazy, the bigoted, the agenda freaks. Damn, where did I read that...............based on the INS coming into small towns, organizing a big bust with the local cops, then when the courts come in with blatant travesties of justice, the feds boogie and let the local badges take the heat, pay the fines, do the time, etc. Gilbert Arizona was a prime example.

Austin police say however, they will continue to cooperate with federal agents who have criminal warrants for illegal immigrants.

Why the hell would they do that? Wouldn't that hurt their trusting relationship with the illegal aliens?

I understand your point, but I may disagree on whether the time has come. It won't be a black/white line, it will, IMHO, be very gradual in certain areas.
One cop I talked with, a deputy sheriff, and he said that he would use his best judgement to know where to focus his skills. He also said "why shouldn't I?" "That (expletives deleted) Clinton got away with all sorts of crap, and he got elected twice!" "I will always spend more time and effort going after the tweakers selling amphetamines to school kids, than some brown skin swinging a shovel."
Kinda' hard to see when that time comes, but darn I do see interesting changes out there.

And yes, there is a frustration with law makers. They seem to ignore the plain folks, in many peoples minds. The 'can't make the laws change to be fair because the SOBs are bought and paid for!'

Both points well taken. I used to be a cop myself here in Ohio, back in the 80's (seems soooo long ago), my cousin works for the feds, and my grandfather was a police chief. It IS frustrating at times when other agencies mess things up, and generally they do (or at least used to). And I agree that stopping people to find out their immigration status is not a generally good thing (though they stop you for all sorts of things nowadays, and guarntee they will/would stop immigrants for low tires and check status while they were at it).

But we do have a problem with illegal immigration in this country, we have a method for entering this country which people just don't seem to care about. I am expected to obey the law, the police are expected to enforce it, and people coming into this country are expected to respect it and obey it as well.

..... These officers have a duty to uphold the law and enforce it's rules. It is for a jury to decide if the law applies. They need to do their job .....

But like all of the world's socialist police forces they have become abjectly politicised, have placed themselves above the law, care only for their own wellbeing -- and pretend to work only enough to qualify for the feral-gummint subsidies that enhance their drug-distribution-network incomes.

Mike:
Exactly.
In Arizona, seatbelts are mandatory. Yet legally a stop cannot me made SOLELY for observed absence of seatbelts.
But any, ANY other infraction, even out-of-date vehicle license tags, and y'all better damn well have those belts fastened, or you're looking at multiple counts!

I want my local police help little old ladies cross the street not be arresting my gardener, my busboy and my airplane pilot. Just because some ill defined aim fits our nativist impulses it shouldn't blind us to the fundamentals of States and local rights vs the Federal Masters. Watching local authorities enforce the loony ADA legislation should have taught us a good lesson.
