Austin Police Won't Arrest People Only For Immigration Status

The U.S. Justice Department, which controls the Immigration and Naturalization Service, says it can't handle the 7 million immigrants currently in the U.S. Therefore, it is considering a proposal to allow local police to do their job for them. Nearly 8 months ago, 19 hijackers slipped through America’s immigration security net committing the most devastating terrorist attacks on American soil. Now, controlling immigration in America has become drastically more important. Austin police say adding immigration duties would undo the trusting relationship local police have built with immigrants. Police say illegal immigrants often do not report crime, for fear they will be deported. Austin Police Assistant Chief Rudy Landeros says, "Our officers will not, and let me stress this because it is very important, our officers will not stop, detain, or arrest anybody solely based on their immigration status. Period." Austin police say however, they will continue to cooperate with federal agents who have criminal warrants for illegal immigrants.

Do we always have to learn after the fact?

I could turn around and ask, why didn't INS do their jobs, why didn't the airport screeners do their jobs. If either group had done their jobs, 9/11 wouldn't have happened and we wouldn't be having this debate.

As it is, Bush wants to legalize em all anyways, so it'll be a moot point.

Hell, the only way APD could start rounding up illegals, is to go after anybody with dark skin and ask for papers constantly. I will never ever ever ever support a government that does that.

I would think that this might perk up a few Middle Eastern ears that wish to do America harm.

Btw, there are already a large group of people that wish to do America harm, a group that can do much more damage than any middle eastern hijacker or right wing extremist who likes explosives. They can damage America without killing anybody.

You and I call them politicians.

You must be mistaken Nancy, all the illegals in our country are just hard working lawn and garden folks taking care of their families.

LOL! 25% of the California prison population are illegal aliens. Makes you wonder why all those "hardworking" produce pickers and gardeners are locked up.

To duplicate what state and local police forces are capable of doing on illegal immigration would require more than 100,000 INS agents.

This would be one of the best things the Federal government could do, if indeed that's what it takes. And let about 100,000 drones go from other bureaucracies at the same time.

Don't you know that Bush recently went on record as saying that he is against legalizing illegal aliens? Yeah, I know. What he says and what he will do is two different stories.

Hell, the only way APD could start rounding up illegals, is to go after anybody with dark skin and ask for papers constantly. I will never ever ever ever support a government that does that.

You are arguing at the extremes. Face it, what the Feds are asking the police to do is that in the course of performing their regular duties if they suspect that a person is not of legal status they can ask what their immigration status is. If the person can't perfect the documentation then the process moves on from there with INS involvement.

Do you want to put them in the position of stopping everybody who's skin is dark, checking for papers.

I would like to see the police stop everybody regardless of skin color and check their papers. I wouldn't mind if the police asked to see my papers. I haven't broken any laws so I have nothing to worry about. It's only the criminals who have to worry. By the way, there are more than one million illegal aliens from throughout Europe roaming around the United States, so it's not just a "dark skin" thing that we're dealing with here.

Yes, those illegals mowing the lawns and washing the dishes are just waiting to strap bombs on themselves or take over airliners or mail out anthrax.

No, of course they're not doing those things. They're too busy stealing cars, burglarizing homes and businesses, raping women and girls, dealing drugs, selling counterfeit ID, running around in street gangs, doing drive-by shootings, etc, etc, ...

25% of the California prison population is comprised of illegal aliens, and they're probably not serving prison sentances just for being "undocumented".

I'm at a loss for words.

There are many forms of terrorism.

When million upon millions of criminal illegal aliens invade our nation, spit on our sovereignty, fill our jails, choke off our socail services, drive the wages down, while driving taxes up, jam are already over crowded classrooms, standing room only in many big city ERs, while many of our trama centers have shut down due to illegal aliens failing to pay for treatment, etc etc etc.

So yes, these are terrorist that have invaded our country illegally. We are suppose to be a nation of laws.

If we fail to control our borders and immigration, we will lose our country.

What Austin is trying to say is they have a more trusting relationship with the illegals than they do with US Citizens and the Constitution. Who would a thunk it? LOL, like this wasn't obvious for the last couple of decades!

We will lose our country much quicker by turning it into a police state.

Don't get me wrong, I care nothing (and I've posted on other threads similar sentiments) for illegal immigrants.

However, two things stand out to me :

It's not for the local PDs to determine if one is here illegally or not. It gives me the creeps to even think that a police officer could try and force you to prove yourself a citizen at random checks. When you put that much power in the hands of a group of people who already have a large amount of power, your living in a police state.

Our police department is stretched thin as it. We had three murders wednesday (I know, not a lot, I've lived in Houston). They mentioned in the paper how thin the police department was spread dealing with those three murders (which is a rarity). Spreading our police department even thinner for something like this makes no sense.

I would rather take my chances with illegal immigrants, than having my local police officers pulled off the line, to go checking people's papers. I'm not afraid of illegal immigrants like some. I've been around them all my life. It's the way it is in a border state. If I feel my life is in danger from some illegals, I can start carrying a firearm, I have a concealed permit.

I'm just looking at the big picture. We have a major problem with illegal immigration in this country and it's getting worse with each passing day. How do we get it under control? We have to do something. We have to start somewhere. Think about all the times we have to show our ID (our papers) in our daily life. Today I took money out of my bank account and had to show my ID. Then I went to the post office to pick up a package and had to show my ID. If I were to fly somewhere this weekend, I would have to show my ID at the ticket counter and maybe at the boarding gate too. If by showing my "papers" it makes this country safer from terrorism and at the same time helps to round up the millions of illegal aliens, then I feel that's a small price to pay. Sure, you give up a little bit of freedom in the process, but then freedom is not pure or absolute to start with.

I guess trapping the Bush girls is much higher priority than illegals.

Or counterfitting, or bank robbing, or interstate smuggling, or any number or Federal crimes that local police routinely arrest people for and then turn over to the feds.

The point is that if you're a citizen, it's no holds barred: they'll arrest for anything they can think of. But if you're an alien, you're part of a group that has more rights than citizens, a group which is now free to violate a laundry list of laws, like falsification of federal forms and documents, non-payment of taxes, etc.

That is what these chiefs are now asserting: that they will enforce the laws only against those who agree to them. As for foreign nationals who have contempt for the laws? That's cool. No problem. Us chiefs are only here to keep the gringos in line.

You seem like an intelligent person. What has made you buy into the rhetoric coming out of DC, that the Constitution/Bill of Rights can just be set aside for a while and then when everything is better, it'll come back? I'm sure the German citizens thought so in the 1930s. I'm sure the Russian peasants thought so in the 1910s and 1920s. They thought giving up a little freedom would make everything secure and prosperous - little did either group of people know they were in for a decades long nightmare, that neither have fully recovered from.

To quote Thomas Jefferson, Those who desire to give up freedom in order to gain security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one. Are you sure you belong at FR, and not DU?

No offense but you need to get your priorities straight. Murders have happened since the beginning of time. So what?

Our entire cities and regions of this country are being taken over by MILLIONS OF ILLEGALS. With millions more on the way. WTF, These few murders will be investigated. They always are. A few burglaries and car thefts etc and most routine petty crime, IS NOT THIS NATIONS PRIORITY DAMN IT.

Here's a clue on the big picture on crime, WE ARE BEING INVADED BY MILLIONS OF CRIMINAL ILLEGAL ALIENS. WE ARE A NATION OF LAWS, WE ARE SUPPOSE TO BE AT WAR, WE WERE SUPPOSE TO TIGHTNING OUR SECURITY. WE ARE AT RISK. WE WILL LOSE THIS ENTIRE COUNTRY AT SOME POINT IF THIS CONTINUES AT THIS RATE.

A COUPLE OF GD MURDERS IS NOT THIS NATIONS PRIORITY. BEING INVADED BY MILLIONS OF ILLEGAL ALIENS IS. OR SURE THE HELL SHOULD BE.

ITS MY OPINION THAT THE POLICE NEED TO QUIT GOING AFTER AMERICANS FOR PETTY BULL SH*T AND GO AFTER THE MILLIONS OF CRIMINAL ILLEGAL ALIENS.

Makes sense to me, jezzz!

Joe, your post #131 was right on the money.

The U.S. taxpayers spend $540 billion hard-earned dollars, every year, on Social Services. By the time you factor in the cost of supporting these illegal aliens into the cost of apples, you're not at 69 cents per pound, it's more like $6,900!
