Uganda claims success in Sudan raid

Uganda claims success in Sudan raid

The Ugandan Government says it has captured all four main rebel bases belonging to the rebel group the Lord's Resistance Army inside neighbouring Sudan.

Ugandan Defence Minister Amama Mbabazi said that one camp - Lala, situated about 160 kilometres (100 miles) north of the Ugandan border - was captured on Thursday and the three remaining bases were overrun on Friday.

"The operation began yesterday, by last evening our forces had captured Lala camp and were moving on to other camps," he told Reuters news agency on Friday.

No casualty figures were given, and Mr Mbabazi would not say whether rebels were present at the camps when they were captured.

However the BBC's Will Ross in Uganda says that there is a possibility that the LRA rebels may have simply moved on.

Civilian rescue

Uganda says the operation is the first of a concerted attempt to rescue women and children captured by the LRA for use as slave labour.

It also marks unprecedented co-operation between the governments of Uganda and Sudan.

The military action follows the signing of an agreement earlier this month, whereby Sudan authorised Uganda to pursue the rebels inside its borders.

Sudan agreed to allow Ugandan forces into the country to root out rebel forces, and BBC correspondents say that Mr Mbabazi inferred the agreement between the two countries, which is due to run out on 2 April, may now be extended indefinitely.

Sudanese forces are also said to be on high alert.

Kidnappings

Ugandan forces now face the issue of attempting to free civilian captives - including children - from the LRA.

Correspondents say there is a potential danger that LRA leader Joseph Kony may attempt to use the captives as a human shield to prevent Ugandan forces from capturing him and his fighters.

The LRA has been fighting Ugandan President Museveni for the past 16 years in north of the country, and want to replace the constitution with the Bible's Ten Commandments.

The LRA is said to have abducted up to 12,000 children and turning them into soldiers or, in some cases, concubines.

With all the horror running rampant throughout the African continent I wanted to share some rare good news. Young President Museveni and his wife are the rare compassionate Christian Rulers here. They, by all indications, have a strong commitment to advancing humanity and Christian principles.

Keep them in your prayers.

Thanks for the link! Nice to hear something from Africa that doesn't have to do with Mad Bob Mugabe or his best friend Comrade Mbeki ;-)

Wouldn't it be something if one African country got it together? Uganda could be the Switzerland of the continent. What a great tourist destination it would be. One of my great regrets is what when I was in Mombassa, I didn't have the money to hop on a train and go to Kampala(this was before it got crazy).

How can this be? And how can this be good? The Sudanese government has turned a blind eye to the Muslims capturing and arabicizing of Southern Sudanese Christians and animists.

This is supposed to be good news? Explain how?

Grut, please inform yourself about current events. The government of Sudan (in the north) is in league with the Communist Chinese and has killed two million Christians and animists in the South. What Uganda is doing is GREAT!!!

Rare good news? Uganfda is on the southern border of Sudan, location of the Christian resistance to the Moslem government of Sudan.
Cooperation of Uganda with the Moslem government of Sudan to wipe out Christian resistance bases is not good news.

Last I heard, it was the Moslems who were making slaves of Christians.

Sorry, but this article does not even pass the logic test.

I'm of the opionio that it is Islamist agit-prog, and I'm afraid that you fell for it, Mr. Owl Eagle!

The enslavemtent that is going on is that of black Sudanese Christians in the South of that accursed country at the hands of their Muslim Arab countrymen.

If true, this post is horrendous, as it means the "Christian" government of Sudan is in collusion with one of the most radical Islamic regimes on the face of the earth in the effort to suppress Christians.

This article makes no sense at all. The following link from Human Rights Watch tells of the support the Islamic Sudanese government gives to this accursed group. So, either the BBC is wrong (frequently is) or this is some major Muslim propaganda. The link is:

Sudan and Ugandan terrorists

Please re-read the article. The Ugandans, which are one of the very few Christian contries in Africa are RESCUING fellow Christians who are enslaved in the Sudan. This is such rare good news in Africa that people should be shouting it from the roof tops. I understand why with a quick speed read of an article on Africa, one would assume that it's another story from hell (believe me, I had to read it twice myself) but this actually is good news.

rightofrushUganfda is on the southern border of Sudan, location of the Christian resistance to the Moslem government of Sudan.
Cooperation of Uganda with the Moslem government of Sudan to wipe out Christian resistance bases is not good news.
Last I heard, it was the Moslems who were making slaves of Christians.

Again, please re-read the article. The Government of Uganda is headed by a Christian who has dedicated his efforts to Christian principles and is attempting, successfully, to rescue enslaved Christians from the LRA which is a muslim separatist group. The efforts of Mr. Museveni should be applauded.

BenR2Repeat after me: There is NEVER ANY GOOD NEWS out of Africa.

Yet again, please re-read the article. Rescuing people from slavery is always a good thing. I will assume that you mis-read the contents (as I've mentioned I have a bias toward that myself) and not take any shots at you.

sruleoflawCooperation with the government of Sudan IS NOT GOOD

It's not so much cooperation with the government of Sudan as the govt. of Sudan bellying in to Uganda thanks to a build up of the Army for the purposes (amongst other things) of freeing Christian slaves in Sudan. LarryLied's link does a good job of documenting this.

BenR2 Sorry, but this article does not even pass the logic test.

If true, this post is horrendous, as it means the "Christian" government of Sudan is in collusion with one of the most radical Islamic regimes on the face of the earth in the effort to suppress Christians.

I'm certain that after a thorough re-reading of the article you'll realize that the "Christian" govt. is actually that of Uganda, which has poured a goodly amount of it's limited resources toward rescuing enslaved Christians in the Sudan.

eleni121The following link from Human Rights Watch tells of the support the Islamic Sudanese government gives to this accursed group.

eleni121 [From Link] Children in Uganda are abducted and frequently murdered by the Lord's Resistance Army, a heavily-armed rebel group fighting the Ugandan government

The very first sentence of your link states that the LRA is fighting the Ugandan government. What doesn't make sense?

TO PUT IT IN A CAPSUL- THE UGANDAN GOVT. BUILT IT'S ARMY UP ENOUGH TO FIGHT THE LRA (SUDANESE REBELS) AND INTIMIDATE THE SUDANESE GOVT. (WHICH TURNED A BLIND EYE TO THE ACTIVITIES OF THE LRA). THE RESCUED MANY CHRISTIAN SLAVES AND ARE POISED TO CONTINUE.
Hope I could clear this up.
