I tried all the instructions you folks posted about how to get breaking news...but I can't. Aren't new website designs suppposed to ENHANCE a site? I used to turn to this site for all my breaking news. Now I wasted about 25 minutes and can't get it...so it's off to other sites. And I guess I will visit them first...which means less time on FR.

Ok, I'm getting it now, I just hope visitors get it. These instructions are going to have to stay up for a long, long, time or vistor's/lurker's will just pass on through.
I'm so relieved, I was begining to wonder if I am getting too old for change and turning into a crudge mudgeon, (snickering). On a serious note, I hope this doesn't mess with Freeper's who have smaller monitors, and slow dial ups, or 56K, will it, do you think?

One last suggestion:
Since the bar at the top is "Local", try adding your state as a local topic, to your sidebars. I did that as well.

FR put a lot of work into this. You'll get use to it. Quit your belly achen..So would you silence critics? I thought only liberals did that..I thought it was only liberals that told people to "go to H***"..Guess it isn't the party its the power

There are detailed posts on here telling you how to get breaking nows in the sidebar.
No offense Tomahawk... but are you saying that finding breaking news is now so complicated that we need detailed directions? I would say that is sufficient evidence that the new format is pretty, not functional. And that is NOT the hallmark of conservativism. What do you do when you visit a web site that is unclear? TWell, that's what others are going to do as well. I love FR. I don't like this.

I must say, had I been new to this site, I may not have hung around. It has taken quite a bit of effot to add things like breaking news to the sidebar, and find other things I wanted. If I had been unfamiliar with the site, how would I know what was available? I don't what to be a "I hate change" whiner, but this is difficult. The tiny white fonts on the dark background are hard to see. Maybe i'm just getting old, but I would guess that a large number of Freepers are NOT teenagers with sharp eyes!

It may need speed-tweaking, but the fundamental problem is that the new format transfers
way too much data to create a page.
The main forum page sends about 230k of data to load! That takes anywhere from 15-30 seconds to transfer on my slow rural connection - it's at least 2 or 3 times slower than the old version. Even cached, it's still very slow.
I don't see that as a step forward; too much overhead baggage just to create a page.

peter principle; redesign until its unusable.
To: jraven
The new setup is a step backwards. It is more complicated for the average user and certainly confusing to newbies. The old format was user friendly and took less time to load.

it kinda feels like it is missing a HOME page...

there is a total of 2 graphics. One about 120X75 and the other is a border graphic that takes ess than a second on a slow dialup connection and the page just repeats the already downloaded image all the way down the page. I really dont accept the "The page takes longer" because the code isnt any more complicated. There is too many variables to blame the slowness on the new design. You have network slowness, modem speed, query speed from the database...
Not the two graphics.

I also resigned but from NC. This improved the 'cluttered' look of the new format.
One thing I am having trouble with is keeping it on Eastern time. When I log back on it reverts to Pacific time. Help anyone?

No. Liberals change people's wording to suit their needs. I don't remember typing "Go to H***" in my post. What power do I have here on this forum?? It's just little-ol-me pecking on the keyboard...
Now pull my finger...
To: jraven
I wasted about 25 minutes LOL! If I only "wasted" 25 minutes a day on FR...
To: jraven
so it's off to other sites. And I guess I will visit them first...which means less time on FR. And leaving would do what? There is no adversiting on FR, so you're not going to "hurt" anyone.
I think the new look is a lot more professional.

"The tiny white fonts on the dark background are hard to see. Maybe i'm just getting old, but I would guess that a large number of Freepers are NOT teenagers with sharp eyes!"Yikes! I never thought I'd be nose-to-screen with my computer!;o)
Actually, that's the only complaint I have. I'm not very computer literate, but I've been able to personalize my sidebar very easily.
However, I will admit that when I first saw FR today, it scared me. ;o)
