Personally, I like layout. And regarding the sidebar for breaking news, etc, more times than not, it was used for stories that the poster thought important and not really breaking news.
You have a great site and I for one appreciate the upgrades and improvements you've made.

How do you find someone in the forum? It doesn't appear you can do that anymore. That was a very important feature.
Does anyone know?

Calm Down!
You can have Breaking News in your side bar if you want it. You can have any type of news you want there. Take some time to get used to the new layout.
While I'm not exactly thrilled with the design, there are some nice new features.

I don't want a pretty face, I want information. I don't want slow-loading pretty graphics, I want information. White space does increase readership, I want the white space back. There's too much wasted screen real estate.
This isn't a question of not liking change, it is a question of not liking unnecessary and less-than-desirable change.

EVIL IS UPON US! At least let us choose between the old and new formats! I can't find anything any more!

Sorry, I like it and it seems to actually load faster for me and yes, I am on dial-up. The WebTV stuff will need to be fixed though since so many people use it.
Any time you change things people have issues. Just be patient and let the powers that be respond to these problems. I would venture that FR does not have a full QA lab and focus group testing. Let these hard-working guys have some credit for a nice looking site.

I hate it. Is FR going mainstream, mass market? When's Dan Rather getting a deadicated post site?

I would prefer the old layout. It was faster and and easer to sort thru the info here on fr. Please bring back the headers only of the articles. Im not intersted in seeing the snipits of the content. it takes to much scrolling to see my daily news.

Where's my profile? WHERE'S the DOSE?
HELP!!!!
To: Nogbad
I just opened it in my Opera browser, and it looks pretty good now. The font is easier to read, the warp-scroll and right-side flashing stopped, and all the flags are gone from the left hand side. It's still too skinny, but it's 100% better than with Netscape and IE.

I wonder, is there a way to change the display of "Latest Posts" so that each thread appears only once instead of every single post to every thread?

I agree this is time-consuming and not worth the effort. I'm off to find the news. I'll come back sometime when I have a few days to search for things.

If this new format were only a little "busier" it would be perfect.

You know, this isn't the only thing that's bad. I was shocked, not pleasantly, when I logged on this morning and saw a browser cluttered up with lots of form and very little information. Before, when clicking on latest posts, I could immediately see the titles of at least 50 posts, and a good proportion of them were visible on the screen. Now I can see but the first two or three posts in narrow column down the center of the screen. And the thing took forever to load. Not a good thing.

Is there any way to remove the "question" so I can move breaking news to the top of the page?
Is there any way to get more then 4 or 5 listings in the breaking news before the "more" prompt? I want my breaking and frontpage news lists as long as they used to be...is that just a setting?
Over all I REALLY REALLY HATE IT. But I am attempting to learn to live with it.

I kind of like it. It make a nice impression when you see it. Beside, the times, they are a changin' and if Freepers want to continue to expand and forward a positive front and have an impact on our future, lots of things are going to change as FR grows.
I like the region-specific header section at the top above the post, kind of a local activist alert.
I'm sure if you forward specific concerns to JR he'll consider them along with the others. This current site was designed along the same lines and I do think it looks great.
