No, this is awful!
I don't know where anything is anymore!
Where are the sidebars?
I used to go straight to them
to find out
what was going on.
I said: Isn't it possible that much of the discomfort people are feeling right now is simply the result of having to learn something new, or having to simply adjust their ingrained expectations as to what they are going to be met with, visually, when the page pops up? If that is the case, then time (and a relatively small amount of it) will cure the 'problem.' If not, then maybe Jim and John do indeed have a formidable amount of re-working to do. I'm betting that it's eighty percent the former, and twenty percent the latter.
Your (big) concerns appear to be in the twenty-percent category, and I hope Jim and John can address them to your satisfaction. If not, the forum has indeed taken a giant step backwards. But I'm willing to bet that you're going to be happy with the adjustments that are no doubt in the works, if you're patient enough to hang around.
there are a number of folks in here today who, had they
spent 1/10 the time exploring the new format as they have
whining about it, woulda been beta gurus by now.
as was oft-repeated to my userbase in my (not so old) sysadmin days,
when all else fails, RTlovelyM !
(... then again, there're a couple in here oughta try gettin' a real computer ;-)
Not surprisingly, you get the message completely wrong. My tenure here is a non factor, except for the fact that I am adaptable, understanding and sanguine. The people who've been here the longest have the fundamental wisdom ... patience, grace and confidence in the proprietors. The longest tenured folks should be the most agitated by change ... we're not.
I'm not seeing that. I only see what has been received.
If there has been some modifications, it is almost imperceptable to me.
If anyone , which is highly doubtful, can give instructions / aid to " webbies " , I know ( speaking on my and their behalf ) that it will be greatly appreciated. We are the redheaded orphans , around here. Instructions are given for compter users. Someties they work for us; most of the time, they don't . The added bells and whistles NEVER work for us; but against us. Usually, I don't care ; NOW I DO ! This isn't a case of " getting used to something new / changed ". IT'S A CASE OF BEING LOCKED OUT OF USE !
buy a real pc !
New Format Thanks Jim R and Crew
BADJOE (who collects monthly FReeper donations) says that FR has lost $133/per month in donations and it's going up!! Folks are voting with their pocketbook, and not waiting to the next FReepathon!!
Is that an insult? If so, you didn't realize how dense I am after taking care of 2 flu-stricken creatures for a week.
And if it was, it was totally uncalled for since this is the "This is Awful" thread and I am totally on topic. I was just giving my first impressions of the new look like everyone else.
Even if it took up the top 1/3 of the screen when getting on initially, you would have more room on the right for 'breaking news' and more room for the article titles. Plus, you would immediately scroll past it when looking at articles. JMO!
The other major problem, is that the added bells and whistles ( pagger , etc. ) are incompatable with WebTV and simply DO NOT WORK ! I can't use the insructions to " subscribe " to TOPICS ... there are NONE that show , as is stated in the side bar. I have automatically been " given " highighted topics , one of which I DO NOT WANT , and there is no way to remove it.
The top of the screen, on the news forum page, is sliced in twain, so that I can only see the bottom most portion. The font size, in the side bars and on top ( no, I have NO way of fixing that ) is almost illegable.
If any more damned bells and whistles are to be added, NO I 'll NOT be " pleased " by them , as they, and the majority of the prior ones have been, will be UNUSABLE !
I can learn new things . I can't " learn" / get used to something that I am almost entirely being shut out of.
What's this WE sh*t, paleface? Speak for yourself.
It got posted to one of the other threads. The control switch for those notifications is in the upper right corner of your state forum display screen.
Mine was already set to indicate "no notifications," but toggling it back and forth seemed to get rid of those forum messages on top of my screens. Thus, for now I'm no longer stateless.
1. Link Free Republic to the home page (http://www.freerepublic.com/) on every page.
2. Create a site map/clarify "topics" vs "forums".
I think there's a bit of confusion with the topics page linked on the upper right and what I assume are considered "forums" on the left. (Campaign 2002, General Interest, News/Activism, Religion, VetsCoR)
It appears that the topics are not "subtopics" of individual "Forums", but an alternate categorization method of all posts, site-wide...?
If so, I'd put a link to "Topics" with the link to "forums" on the left. And to make it more intuitive, I'd say "List by Forum" or "List by Topic".
3. On the posting form, you allow people who are starting a new thread to type in topics or select them from a list. I'd at least say there that "the topic must be already established"... I'd probably force they use the selection method to avoid problems of typos.
(I've read most but not all the posts on these threads, so if this has all been said before, I apologize...)
so save your sanctimony for someone silly enough to buy into it.
hell, she even has my dog !
When can I expect your most gracious present ? Tomorrow would be nice, but you'll have to work around MY schedule. : - )
