[history]
Mayor Willie Brown's office is asking the Bush administration to forgive the bulk of a $400,000 city debt that was incurred when federal funds were used to buy a mosque for the Black Muslims.
Behind the city's plea is a politically embarrassing real estate transaction initiated with public funds by a nonprofit organization headed by convicted felon Charlie Walker, one of Brown's most avid political supporters.

As I call it "The Big Dirty Disappointment By The Bay".

rundown homeless encampment.

Maybe they can't afford to repay $400K because they're broke from paying for city employee's sex change operations?

Bingo.

Ask yourself: What would the reaction be to the headline "City officials use Federal funds to purchase church for Christian group"?
(Actually, there'd be no such headline. It would be replaced by one several months earlier: "Feds put halt to attempt by city officials to purchase church for Christian group."
The press would have exposed the story the moment anyone at city hall even had the merest glimmer of such an idea form in his head.

$400K could easily be obtained in an afternoon just by passing the hat among the rich liberals in San Francisco. Can you imagine what would happen if, say, Omaha, had accidently used federal funds to build a traditional Christian church to honor their pioneer heritage? Omaha would be too embarassed to ask. They'd hold a bake sale, car wash or other fundraiser to pay down the debt.
Substitute Oklahoma City, Bismarck, Mankato or any other city outside the liberal zones for Omaha and you'd get the same reaction. Why in the sam hell should people making $20K or $30K annually pay for the boondoggles of those making double or triple?

Why in the world would anyone expect the taxpayer to pay for a church.
