Altman is a bitter classless loser of a person. I am glad he didn't win.

Excuse me, but no black kids in my school had to endure one fifth of the ridicule I went through when Laugh-In was on TV and featured the Farkle Family. You have NO IDEA how horrible it was for me, the tallest, palest, brightest-haired target in town (so it seemed when I was 12) but that's okay. I guess it only hurts and holds him back if someone calls a kid a racist name. All the kids who live through the fatso, ugly, funny-looking, retarded, clumsy, egghead and other remarks for years have secondary misery to YOURS. How compassionate you are.
But enough of that - I am completely over it. I don't want sympathy, special treatment or recognition for surviving the Farkle Family years. Not will I give anyone my age any special sympathy for living through the slavery and oppression years.... because they are SO over!

I found her tears of joy sincere...

Altman is so enamored of his own self-perceived genius, I'm sure it's incredible to him that he didn't win. I'm sure there will be plenty of hangers-on around to tell him how great he is on the way home though.

A few months back articles interviewing people in the business here in LA ridiculed Berry's intense focus on getting the Oscar for any film, particularly after her car accident. Those same folks who ridiculed her then apparently voted for her when push came to shove. There's nothing wrong with her campaigning for the award- she recognizes that politicking has a great deal to do with who wins what I wouldn't deny that, her talent notwithstanding.

Oh God, where's the barf alert?
To: LWalk18
Why should Berry pretend that she wasn't happy to the first black Best Actress? Imagine if she had had the class to accept her award as if race didn't matter. By dwelling on her race it only raises the specter of preferences. A winner should show humility and praise the also rans.
To: marajade
I missed it. Was he really shaking his head? He is a major league Clymer. Maybe we are going to have to start calling people Altmans along with Clymers. Maybe an Altman is a Clymer on steroids.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are just a bunch of Hobbitphobic racists. It is the hairy feet that is the problem, short people are okay with them, Randy Newman got an Oscar, right!

AHHHH,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
"the operational definition of racism".......that clears alot of things up regarding your thoughts on this.
You're that kind of conservative. You take the limited definition of racism etc. that you get in a college textbood, as opposed to the version that is provided in legal foundation.

Affirmative action nite at the Academy Awards.Playa' hatin' nite on Free Republic for some of you. What nite was it when all winners were white eh?
To: mafree
"Well I have two White parents and she has one, but I consider her no less White than I am."
Halle looks Black.
Halle looks mixed and far more white than a full blooded black.
Simply put, Halle Berry wouldn't fit in National Geographic's Africa documentary.
Halle thinks of herself as Black.
Halle is Black.
Reality check. Halle is whatever her parent were.
Which in this case, half white and half black.
What you "think" you are doesn't determined your genes.(duh)
Halle made history tonight- that wouldn't have been so if she were White.
When will you feel your race is equal enough that such an accomplishment is an individual achievement?
I find it really sad that some still have to look at these sorts of things in terms of blacks struggling for recognition.
It reminds me of something I read about wealthy black atheletes, who somehow still cannot see themselves as part of the upper "rich" class of Americans.
This seems to indicate that these sort of black inferiority complexes are not rooted in being oppressed or deprived at all...but rather just being black.
This is wrong. You should like yourself and being black just as whites like themselves and like being white.

Maybe some people believe in a color blind society and are just getting sick of everything being about race.

Her features are really not like most of the black women I know, but then few women I know are really drop dead gorgeous. She has more of blended look going on - with a lot of caucasian influence.

If you ask me all the songs that were nominated sucked, so if anyone had to win I'm glad it was Newman.

Babs and Robbie just about made me lose dinner. That was SICK! EEEWWWWW!
