In what way did you find her speech refreshing? Was it the 74 years of black actresses paving the way,,,,,,,,the downtrodden life that she was provided in private school in a priveleged upbringing? Or was it the fake crying game she made us all suffer through. Seriously, what was refreshing,,,,,,,,,(sob sob sob)
Everything she said presupposes she would win or not win based on her race - and not the merit of her acting.
REFRESHING,,,,,,SOUNDLS LIKE THE SAME OLD ROUTINE TO ME.

What a crazy night. All those black gowns depressed me. But I was not unhappy that Denzel won. He and Russell were both deserving. And of course the highlight was Ron Howard winning. And Whoppi was a disaster, even worse than the first year she hosted. What a shame those beautiful jewels were wasted on her. And Mel Gibson looked pretty good too.
The tabs are going to have a field day. Warren Beatty was supposedly campaigning very strenuously for Halle. This pissed off Annette. Now she will really be pissed cauz Halle won and she didn't. Or so the tabs will hope for.
In general, I think the Hollywood crowd is nuttier than ever and really, really not in step with the rest of the country.
The thread was fun. Thanks so much.

The racial dynamics of German vs, Swede are completely different than Black vs. White- no comparison. That's why I think it is important to not perpetuate such unreal divisions. That this artificial division into black/white forms part of our culture is no reason to keep it going.
You are right but you are overlooking the fact that the divisionsm, though artificial in a biological sense, have nonetheless been very real throughout history.
Just curious. Would you equally accept her decision if she had decided to reject her black father and self-identify as white? If not, why not?
I'd have a hard time with her identifying as white simply because she doesn't look white. She looks like a black woman and no one can deny that.

Just saw Julia Roberts on E. She seemed really drunk. Anyone else catch that?

Did you see Altman shake his head when he lost... Do think Altman knew why he lost? This year has been about the strength of the USA and you can't be a winner when you're trashing it...

I bet he got mad that this thread was left here and not transfered to "General Interest".He started a thread there in competition with this one, it had hardly any posts.

Bald men can be sexy. Yeah, but not that one. Ben Kingsley, yes. Ron Howard, no.
Glad Opie won, though; he seems ok for a liberal.

hueeeeee disgusting....that Lord Of The Rings guy has his boytoy with him....they are holding hands.....My 14 yr. old daughter asked me who that guy was. I told her that Ian McKellan is homosexual; she said she knew that, and I said that the guy was probably his boyfriend. She said "but he's so young"! And I said that's right, it is his BOYfriend! Looks like Woody Allen's not the only one who robs the cradle!

HAlle was really great in Monster's ball. Spacek gave the better performance, in my opinion, but no one could say Halle wasn't really terrific in her film. I don't begrudge her the Oscar at all.
Denzel is a different story.
Crowe was deliberately slighted.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are just a bunch of Hobbitphobic racists.
To: daisyscarlett
That makes sense... I couldn't understand why she'd be thanking Warren Beatty...

I can do that with my 200 watts per channel amps driving Definitive Technology towers with 500watt powered subwoofers, not to mention the Mirage towers for surrounds. The neighbors have learned to just tolerate me...heh,heh.

She was asked to skip the Premiere of GWTW at the Lowes theater in Atlanta. She did OK .. thanks for setting the record .. it's was a while ago when I read about her story ..

"And if I recall .. at the time Hattie McDaniels rec'd this award she wasn't allowed to attend the ceremonies because she was black .. I could be wrong ."
You are wrong. I found this:
"Hattie McDaniel is distinguished as the first African-American to win an Academy Award. In 1940, she received an enthusiastic standing ovation at the awards ceremony held at the famous Coconut Grove in Los Angeles."

No. Just that today, the biggest racists are in the black community.Given the operational definition of racism you are wrong.
To be honest, once someone mentions the word "race", my brain tends to look for something else to do.
That's OK- I'm sure that doesn't happen when it matters to you.

She was pretty giggly, I caught *that*.

I will agree, Ron Howard does look much better in a baseball cap.
To: mafree
you don't like being reminded that race sometimes matters. That's the problem with you liberal thinkers (and it is liberal thinking), race should not have mattered, only the performances should have. I guess you're also in support of affirmative action, quotas and all of that BS. I believe Halle deserved it, but not Denzel.
