FAIRBORN, Ohio, Mar 23, 2002 (AP Online via COMTEX) -- Hackers operating outside the United States tried unsuccessfully to enter the computer network at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, officials said.
There were 125,000 attempts made early Friday, said Lt. Gen. Richard Reynolds, commander of the Aeronautical Systems Center.
"I don't know whether they wanted to get in and just get information, or whether they wanted to get in and cripple our network," Reynolds said.
Public affairs director Lt. Col. Ed Worley called it "a concerted and directed attack, and one of the most orchestrated we've seen in about the last six months, and by 'we' I mean the Air Force."
The base, located east of Dayton, is home to the Air Force Materiel Command headquarters, the National Air Intelligence Center, research laboratories, and the program management offices for the B-2 Stealth bomber, F-22 Stealth fighter and other major weapon systems.
It also houses one of the government's biggest supercomputer centers, the Major Shared Resource Center.

Hate to tell you this, but this is nothing new. Any hacker out there knows what bases we have - they may not know the physical location, but they know where it is on the internet. Attacks against military networks is nothing new. I was involved with certain elements working against hackers back in 1990-1992.
WP is a large base. The Air Force Logistics Command building has a large sign facing the local state highway. The Air Force Museum is on this base. It is the oldest military airfield in the U.S., having been named in part after the Wright Brothers. Anyone who cares at all has heard of it.
FEBRUARY 10, 2003 : (OHIO : 4 UZBEK TERRORISTS TARGEING WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB?) There are reports that four men from the Middle East who are being held in the Tri-State may have issued threats at an Ohio Air Force Base. The men -- Sanjar Yormuhamdov, Sayfitdin Mulloer, Kahranan Pultov, and Zohirjon Zahidon -- are from Uzbekistan, a former Soviet bloc nation. They were arrested Friday in Fairborn, Ohio, near the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, WLWT Eyewitness News 5 reported. The men are being held in the Kenton County jail for allegedly overstaying their approved stay in the United States, according to WLWT. Sources told WLWT that the men might have been involved in a threat at the base. However, none of the agencies involved in the investigation would confirm officially that the men made specific threats. Additional details about the arrests have not been released.
