This just in.........The Port and Maritime Security Act of 2001
TSRA E-mail | Texas State Rifle Association

Posted on 03/22/2002 11:04:28 PM PST by Squantos

The port security legislation has already passed in the Senate (by voice vote) is S. 1214, "The Port and Maritime Security Act of 2001." This bill contains a provision that could restrict firearms in ports, but the legislation does not narrowly proscribe what a "port" is. Therefore, there is the potential for this legislation to be interpreted in a way that restricts firearms from areas in and around ports, including port service facilities located miles from the water's edge.

If the Senate bill were the final action on this subject, the legislation could adversely affect commercial and recreational fishermen, waterfowl hunters, houseboat residents, and individuals who live, work, recreate, and drive in and around ports. The House's port security legislation is H.R. 3983, "The Maritime Transportation Anti-terrorism Act of 2002." The House bill doesn't contain provisions restricting firearms possession in or around ports as the Senate version does.

Once the House passes its bill, the House bill and the Senate bill must be brought together to iron out any differences between the two before the legislation is sent to the President for his signature. Leaders on the issue from the House and Senate meet in a conference to work out the differences between the two bills. Plan A is to have the conference eliminate the Senate bill's firearms restrictions. If we are not successful at that, Plan B is to get the conference to adopt language that narrowly defines ports as the areas along the water's edge where the actual loading and unloading of cargo and/or passengers occurs.

NRA and TSRA are watching this legislation very closely so that the lawful possession of firearms is not unduly restricted in the Congress' effort to make ports more secure. Your help and support is needed now.

Thanks for the news. I can't wait to call my Dim congressman and give his office workers a piece of my mind. So now it will be illegal to carry my pistol, with a CCW permit, when I go out Salmon fishing on the Sound? Get real.

Or you can tell the nice guy from the ATF that all your guns were stolen and why the hell didn't he find the bad men who took them.

I'm buying a speargun. That'll fit in around the docks.

Here's an idea.

Why don't they just pass a law banning terrorists from owning firearms?

I think that in ten years, it will be said for certain that you are permitted to own a gun in part of one county in Oklahoma every February the 30th.

Just "common sense gun safety, for the children".

Travis if you're out there, am I the only person on the planet that reads Mother Earth News and Soldier of Fortune?

I'm placing this in the "UN List" because I remember reading that Koffi had suggested that the UN should come up with international airport security guidelines. If they've decided to do that, they'll probably include guidelines for ports also. Since a lot of the gun confiscation plans seem to start in the UN, they may try to sneak this through the backdoor as some kind of UN treaty, etc.
