NEW YORK (AP) The question is awkward to ask, but not hard to answer: Why were no women among the 343 firefighters killed at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11?
Numbers tell the story. Nationally, roughly 2 percent of professional firefighters are female. In New York City, women account for just 28 of 11,400 firefighters less than 0.3 percent.

Why can't people just do their job without expecting laurels for it. They get a paycheck don't they? I am so sick of people screaming "Look at me, look at me."

unfortunately, alot of them (firefighters) dont think past what the union spoon feeds them, result is demoncrat voters....not trying to use the broad brush, just what i have personally observed. i wish i were wrong....

Is she fussing because she didn't get to die like the male firefighters did? Does she want equal opportunity in death?

I have an answer to your question about how many women showed up and volunteered to go up the stairs. none. Or if there were, i bet the men on the NYFD wouldnt let them.

I'll let you know when I hear more. I suspect the ticket preference--after the families & firefighters from the local houses who escort the families for the presentation, of course--will be to firefighters from the US, then international firefighters (I remember seeing Brit firefighters at some of the funerals), then to the general public.

"If 348 died at the WTC then there should have been a much greater number than 343 present and there should have been at least 1 female there if not more. Assuming those who entered the building had a 100% chance of death, there is a good chance that there were females present and none of them entered the buildings."
Agreed there would have been more than 343 present, haven't seen any figures on how many were at risk. I had assumed some of those who entered the building made it out safely - perhaps some who had just helped someone out, some regaining their strength, some who didn't go in after the orders came to evacuate.
The article doesn't indicate there were any women firefighters in the building. Given the stats, it's possible there weren't any.

Well, most Firemen are union. And our union is part of the AFL-CIO, so whenever you see our union, they are giving cash to Rats. However, the vast majority of Firemen, where I work (Austin TX), are conservative.

"It took a while, but the PC nuts have surfaced again"
Exactly correct. In the immediate aftermath of 9/11, the lefties had to put a cork in it and go underground for a while. I knew that it would only be a matter of time until they reared their ugly heads again...and here it is.
As for this woman's complaint....given the statistics of speed, endurance, and strength (only 1 out of 138 women can meet the AVERAGE male stats in these areas), women should not be placed in positions where their presence could cost innocent lives.

"You know, a few years ago this exact question was raised on one of the news magazine shows on tv... The feminist perspective was represented by Gloria Alred, who stated that she did not see the ability to throw a person over their shoulder and take them out to be a positive... " I saw that show. It would have been funny if they weren't serious. I like the part when gloria said it's the department's problem if the girls trying to get in are not strong enough, not the applicant's problem. And that the departments need to buy the girls "electric axes or whatever" to make them able to do the job. That was when I had to turn off the TV.

The first site is the International Association of Firefighters. The second site is Firehouse.com, which is magazine site with up-to-date news on firefighting. They have an except from Dennis Smith's "Report from Ground Zero," his newest book.

Of course; any female who can pass this test is arguably not a woman in any way either. How do you define a woman??
To: Jonx6
What a great logo on the page! Weepy me (after reading chapters from Dennis Smith's new book) got all choked up seeing the picture the Austin FD selected for the center of the patch. It's a very fitting memorial to all those who died on 9/11.
Firehouse is a great magazine. I know my daughter told me--but I, of course, had forgotten--that Dennis Smith founded Firehouse. She has a subscription to the hard copy, but it's a terrific site for breaking fire-related news.
