PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Rhode Island is well north of the Mason-Dixon line. But that didn't stop Gov. Lincoln Almond's office from issuing a proclamation declaring April ``Confederate History and Heritage Month.'' Thomas G. Kogut, a spokesman for the governor, told The Providence Journal that it was ``processed in error'' at the request last month from a southerner named Calvin Johnson, who then posted it on his Web site. Johnson's Web site _ called ``Proud Son of a Confederate Soldier'' _ featured Rhode Island's proclamation, as well as links to the song ``Dixie,'' and information about those who fought in the so-called ``War of Southern Independence.'' The proclamation's language was supplied by Johnson. It declared April the month in which ``the Confederate States of America began and ended its four-year struggle for states' rights, individual freedom and local control'' just like America's ``Revolutionary forefathers.'' Johnson pulled the proclamation from his Web site when the governor's office realized what it had done and asked him to remove it.

After a fashion. Apparently, their most prominent political families obtained their wealth from the slave trade.

just like America's ``Revolutionary forefathers.''Johnson pulled the proclamation from his Web site when the governor's office realized what it had done and asked him to remove it.

Can't go spreading the truth around now can we? Personally, I wouldn't have pulled it. What were they going to do? Shut him down?

Well, that wouldn't be the truth.

At least one "Revolutionary forefather" wanted a strong national union.

That was George Washington.

LOL!! And please don't post the Washington comments because it's a misrepresentation of his comments. No, Hamilton and his ilk might have wanted a strong national government, matter of fact they believed in reestablishing a limited monarchy according to some of the Anti-Federalists. Guess abe filled Al's wish huh?

LOL!! And please don't post the Washington comments because it's a misrepresentation of his comments.

"Your sentiments that are affairs are rapidly drwaing to a crisis, accord with my own. What the event will be is also beyond the reach of my foresight. We have errors to correct. We have probably had too good an opinion of human nature in forming our confederation. Experience has taught us, that men will not adopt & carry into execution, measures the best calculated for their own good without a coercive power.

I do not conceive we can exist long as a nation, without having lodged somewhere a power which will pervade the whole Union in as energetic a manner, as the authority of the different state governments extends over the several States. To be fearful of vesting Congress, constituted as that body is, with ample authorities for national purposes, appears to me the very climax of popular absurdity and madness."

Washington to John Jay, August 19, 1786

Quoted from "Washington; Writings", The Library of America, John Rhodehamel, ed.

Prove in the record that this excerpt from Washington's writings does not represent his thoughts.

You wouldn't want to mislead people, would you?

Walt

And slavery! Don't forget defense of the institution of slavery. The fought for that, too.

Don't worry, I can tell if a post has legs or not. This one is good for 75 to 125 replies tops.

Now no fair padding it.

;o)

The name of the colony was "Rhode Island and Providence Plantations" - and it stll is. The first permanent settlement was "Providence Plantations". It was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, an English minister fleeing Massachusetts to seek freedom of worship.

By the mid 18th century Rhode Island (utilizing the labor of black and Indian slaves) reached the peak of it's prosperity. Their principle commercial interests was the slave trade - they purchased molasses from the West Indies, their distilleries converted it to rum, which was traded along the African coast for slaves, many of which remained in service on the plantations within the state.

Better watch out, 4CJ, pointing out actual facts in American history, instead of the myths of the educational system will draw the flamethrowers...
