Colin Quinn Show (NBC Gets One Right?)

Posted on 03/11/2002 6:10:18 PM PST by Naspino

I just finished watching the Colin Quinn Show on NBC. I was amazed that maybe, finally, NBC allowed a decent show on the air.

There was no pretense of being politically correct. In fact in his "Town Hall" meeting with several ethnic comedians they made several racial jokes (and like Rush says its funny when its true).

One came from a black comedian who said he was in a Taxi cab with an Arab driver. The Arab looked back through the mirror and said "Why do you look at me this way?" to which he replied "What way?".

Arab: "Like I did it."

Comedian: "Did what?"

Arab: "Like I flew the plane into the building."

Comedian: "This ain't nothing new. I looked at you people like this before 9/11."

Then he said to the audience: "When I looked up and saw the plane hit the building I didn't think 'those damn Swedes! What did we not buy enough watches? Why did they do this.'"

"I said those damn arabs" and then he looks at the Iranian comedian and says "Guess what.. I was right."

It was refreshing to hear people talk like we do in real life and not through a network filter.

The Iranians will be amused to learn they are Arabs.

Well thats the beauty of it -- NO POLITICALLY CORRECT SPEECH. When you see someone that looks 'Arab' you call them an 'Arab'.

Calling an Iranian an Arab is not politically incorrect; it is factually incorrect.

I think you miss the point. If it looks arab its arab.

I worked on an MTV show with Colin Quinn. A good enough guy, although I don't find him particularly funny.

"I didn't think 'those damn Swedes! What did we not buy enough watches?" Shouldn't that be "Swiss"? -- they make the watches.

Maybe-- either I types it wrong or he said it wrong -- it was Live.

I'll drop this thread since no else finds it interesting that NBC would air a show like this.

One man's 'beauty' is another's 'cluelessness'...

Also, you're forgetting that 1) under political correctness, black people are not to be held responsible for anything they do or say, and 2) judging people by their demographic group is a characteristic of leftist, not conservative thought.

So the charming remark that has so moved you doesn't even qualify as politically incorrect...

I think you miss the point. Iranians are not Arabs. That's the way it is. I'm sorry if it upsets your worldview or anytrhing, but that's just the way it is.

O.K. so the correct "politically incorrect" thing to do is to call both Arabs and Iranians "towelheads"! ;-)

Flame away!

hmmm. think that he was just engaging in a little 'they all look alike' labeling. same way as all of caucasian persuasion are called 'cracker'. by the way, isn't it upsetting when someone sees magenta and says 'dark red'? they must need some brain cells from al -the collosus- gore.

I've taped it, haven't seen it yet. I admit I'm skeptical. I remember an awful lot of very mean-spirited,
so-called "jokes" aimed at various Republicans while he was Saturday Night Live's news anchor.
(Plus, seems like he could never read an entire sentence without tripping over his tongue.)

A good enough guy, although I don't find him particularly funny.

I saw him a couple years ago at a small club in NYC with a friend for her birthday and he was great. There was a five minute part that had us literally crying!(along with about a half dozen others). The rest of the crowd was just staring. I think half of those had no idea what he was talking about and the rest were uptight about it. (It was real 'inside baseball' type stuff, you had to understand some very obscure references.)

After the show we were at the bar upstairs and he came over to buy us drinks because he said he was going to bail out of that routine but he couldn't looking at us front and center. He was a very nice guy and glad we were there since it was his favorite bit.
