Vanity: What Is A Good Replacement for Real Jukebox?
self | 3/11/02

Posted on 03/11/2002 3:54:06 PM PST by 11th Earl of Mar

I am in need of a player that can play audio attachments to emails I have received.

Real Jukebox is a pain in the @ss for me for several reasons.

Can anyone suggest a simple download?

I prefer Winamp, with the WMA turned off.

Another bump for WinAmp, small, fast, and very very popular.

Try Irfanviewer at http://www.irfanview.com/. It plays all the common audio and visual formats. Free, small, easy to use and high quality. One of the best free players on the Internet. I have used it for years without any problems.

Thanks. I am downloading Winamp right now. [78 percent complete... slow.... modem connection]

If I uninstall Real Jukebox can I make Winamp my automatic player? [i.e. can I make it work by simply doublicking on an email attachment?] If so, how?

Winamp seems to work OK. I never use it though. I use Media Player most of the time. It gives me better overall sound and especially better surround sound. I do however have to agree that realplayer sucks a big one.

When you run the installer it offers to take over the apprporiate file extensions/file types. OK that and it'll invoke WinAmp any time you doubleclick an appropriate file.

A word of pessism about Real Jukebox. It's hard to uninstall completely. It will linger in your Windows registry and may cause some annoying bugs such as calling, whenever you boot up, for its associated files that are no longer present.

When you use any of these "freebies" make sure you run something like "Ad aware" to make sure they do not install spyware on your computer. Lots of these "free" software applications hide behind a 4,000 page privacy policy written in lawyerese and install software that tracks your surfing habits.

I use X-Cleaner(free) which removes Spyware and Adware after installing something like this. I also use Zone Alarm (free) to keep a constant view of which programs attempt to access the net from my computer.

The latest version, with the Lord of the Rings skin. But just make sure that you turn off WMA during installation. Also in the Preferences section, you can make it Winamp Classic, single-click instead of double-click.
