I suppose I could get offended...if the price is right. Are you a lawyer? LOL
Maybe we can get Jesse J. to shake down these schools like he has done elsewhere!--VBG

Let's not miss a golden opportunity: let's start naming teams after European ethnicities with all abandon! :-) Wouldn't that be showing preference? I can see 'em coming out of the woodwork now, members of every minority activist group complaining that their race isn't getting a fair representation in being considered for sports team names and mascots.
GO WHITIES!!!!!

I felt offended until I put the "Fightin'Whitie" bumper sticker on my pick up truck, now I feel all better.

Go check out the original thread! It shows the picture and I think it looks like Reagan.

This is my email to Mr. Fallis, Director of Athletics at UNC.
His email is: Jim.Fallis@unco.edu . Please be polite, to my knowledge he has nothing to do with this, other than being Director.
Greetings Mr. Fallis, Director of Athletics:
If this request is outside your department, please forward this to the appropriate person(s).
It is my understanding, from reading the ArgusLeader.com http://www.argusleader.com/news/Mondayarticle4.shtml , that someone at your school has formed a team called The Fighting Whities.
I, and a number of others, would like to support the team by buying, and proudly wearing, their T shirt or jersey.
You may reply to me at xxxxxxxxxxxxxx .net.
Thank You

OK so the Blackhawk and the Iroquois are slicks, but still combat aircraft. Yeah, and there are only six people in the known universe who call an "Iroquois" an "Iroquois", but who's counting?
For those not "in the know", the UH-1 Iroquois is universally known as the "Huey". Maybe duck-Americans should be upset?

Both those names are good analogies to the word "Squaw."It's my understanding that THEY were the ones who used the noun squaw as part of everyday conversation. Is that wrong?

That's a good point. I've met several Black Cowboys, as a matter of fact, here where we actually have some cowboys. In fact some of them played for OSU. (grin) I've been to BPRCA rodeos, and as we all know, many of the cowboys in the old west were "free" blacks from the south. But when someone says "Cowboy", you usually think of a white guy, don't you?
You don't?
Okay, Bill Pickett WAS a black guy, after all.
OTOH, having spent some time in Nebraska a few years ago, I can tell you that there ARE black people living there. (Yes, it's true. I even played golf with an Omaha police officer who is black!) BUT, what color is the U of N mascot? He's a white guy. No ifs, ands, or buts about that one.

My understanding was that a squaw was a female Indian. If terms generally and benignly used for Indians are in fact offensive in their correct definition, we should be educated about that. I have nothing whatsoever against Indians. I'll readily acknowledge that they were treated horribly during much of America's history. However, if the state of so many today is deplorable, I hold that against liberal policies in this country which have made a proud people into a bunch of government dependants, rather than integrate them in a healthy manner into the world's greatest society.
Please don't hesitate to call us on these things if we're ignorantly and unintentionally offending Native Americans with language.

And no, I know all about Crispus Attucks being the first man shot at the Boston massacre and what color he was, but I'm getting tired of dignifying you with an answer.

Thank you too, I hope someone is compiling a list!
As long as we're at it, "Sooners" were predominantly white folk as well, but as some would point out there is no way of knowing for sure that ALL the Sooners were white.
There were many freed blacks in the "old west" of 1907, and possibly immigrants from Mexico or other places, but its probably safe to say that the SOONERS were PREDOMINANTLY, but NOT EXCLUSIVELY, white people.
ALMOST as white as the "Cornhuskers" (Defined as the population of Nebraska), but probably whiter than the general population of Cowboys.
For those who pick nits over that sort of thing...
