The United States Postal Service has decided to honor the three New York City firefighters depicted in the famous photo "Flag Raising at Ground Zero" with a special stamp commemorating their efforts in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.
The stamp was unveiled at a White House ceremony Monday afternoon, with the White House press office announcing:
"The design of the stamp is the photograph of three firefighters raising the American flag over the rubble of the World Trade Center. It is the first postage stamp to depict individuals that are still living. The stamp will be available next month in 38, 000 post offices nationwide ."

It is the first postage stamp to depict individuals that are still living. I believe that at least one of the five people on the Iwo Jima flag raising stamp was still living when it was issued.

I see that this stamp is not politically correct. I congratulate the USPS.

Kewl...they didnt sodomize the image with their PC crap.

These stamps weren't politically correct either . . . and probably showed more than one person still living, considering they were issued in 1946.

I just heard that it will be a 45 cent stamp....8 cents going to charity.
45-8=37 sneaky price increase. I still have a huge roll of 33 cent stamps

No living person was recognizable on any of those stamps. The faces on the Navy stamp were likely from the artist's imagination.

The postage stamp unveiled in the Oval Office of the
White House Monday, March, 11, 2002, uses the famous photo by Thomas E. Franklin of The Record showing New York firefighters, from left: George Johnson, Dan McWilliams and Billy Eisengrein, raising the American flag Sept. 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center terrorist attack site in New York. Thanks.

I think a great number of these stamps will be purchased, but a smaller number will actually be used for mail...

I'm glad they didn't insist on re-touching the photo making them all minorities... (see N.Y. statue)

I was wondering if the tax funded Rat groups would attempt to use that as a means of discrimination.

This is an awesome stamp. I agree that many will buy it for collections.
