Larry King, a Scottsdale business consultant active in providing small-business loans backed in part by the federal government, has entered the Democratic race to unseat Republican Congressman J.D. Hayworth.
King, 45, is a board member and past chairman of the Southwestern Business Finance Corp., a non-profit company certified by the Small Business Administration to provide the SBA-backed portion of loans needed for small-business capital.
He has served on civic boards including the Tempe Community Action Agency to the Center Against Sexual Abuse, Valley Leadership, Ballet Arizona, March of Dimes and the FBI Citizens Academy Foundation.
King said he is a moderate Democrat who is concerned that too many Arizona congressmen "oppose working to bring federal dollars back to Arizona."
He said the congressional district, created in redistricting after the 2000 census, needs its share of federal revenue "for vital public safety, educational, economic development and transportation services."
King advocated regional cooperation among the district's cities and its two Indian communities. The district runs from the Fountain Hills area through Scottsdale, Tempe, parts of Chandler and Mesa, and across the Ahwatukee Foothills.
King, who grew up in Westchester County, N.Y., said he has lived in the Valley for 20 years. He is unmarried.
After attending Dartmouth College and completing his undergraduate degree at Boston College, King received a law degree from Arizona State University in 1986.
Scottsdale businessman Craig Columbus also is seeking the District 5 Democratic nomination. The winner of the Sept. 10 primary will take on four-term Congressman Hayworth, also a Scottsdale resident, in November.

What exactly is a "moderate" democrat ? Is that like being just a little bit pregnant ?
What we have here is an active fascist opposing a free market guy. Color me surprised.
According to data from the redistricting commission's Web site, Republicans have a 48% to 30% voter registration edge in the new Congressional district 5. You wouldn't think Hayworth would have any trouble; his old district 6 is much closer, I believe.
Federal dollars come with strings attached Mr. King. Good business people do not want that kind of help.
Mr. King is part of the federal government, Arizona does not need more constraints on their properties or their private lives than we are getting now!
