Condi Rice, as usual, very articulate in expressing U.S. policy & explaining the goals of the war.
Can't have Iran influencing events in Afghanistan in a negative way.
Our policy is not to tolerate growth of drug crops - speaking of poppy cultivation in Afghanistan & drug ties to terrorism. Afghanis need legitimate ways to make a living.
Phillipine hostages will be released if ransom is paid - do we agree with paying ransom? -We absolutely want to see the release of the Burns. Our policy is not to negotiate with terrorists. Abu Saif group is scourge on that region of the Phillipines, need to be eliminated. We're talking with the Phillipine govt. about what to do.

Rice on Middle East: We think the Tenet plan and/or the Mitchell plan provide the best hope for peace, but need to keep violence from escalating.
US policy is to try to get parties back into peace process. There must be maximum efforts to deal with terrorists, but nothing is being done on either side to make things better right now.
Did Ariel Sharon go too far in dealing with terrorism? Israel can't tolerate current conditions. Without making any judgements about any parties, we're simply asking all to try to achieve better conditions.

Rice: The situation with Iraq must be dealt with. The status quo is simply not acceptable.
Re: nuclear arms plan reported in L.A. Times, she says report was selectively leaked & U.S. has looked at all contingencies, which should not be surprising. How do we deter use of weapon of mass destruction against us? Better intelligence, advanced conventional weapons, missile defence. Likelihood of nuclear war with Russia greatly reduced. We will do all we can to deter use of WMD against our interests - only way to deter is to be clear it would be met with a devastating response.

FNS lead-in to Edwards vs Pickering...background music is "Who let the dogs out"...
Seems appropriate. Dems are on the attack as they grasp at straws.

FNS: Tony calls Edwards on a comment. Edwards stated Pickering--in an off-the-record, behind-closed-door meeting with trial attorneys offered a retrial, although probably not legal to do so. Tony stopped Edwards and implied he was trying to put words in Pickering's mouth and asked Edwards how he "knew" this happened. Tony's doing to Edwards what Tony did to Daschle last week--calling him on the carpet. Edwards it doing a lot of "uh's" and stumbling with his responses.
[Edwards wears a smugness. He's wanting so much to run for the Presidency. He's hoping his new attack-dog status will endear him to the Demo elite.]

Most likely the report on nukes was not selectively leaked........most likely the media selectively chose to print what would be considered to do the most harm to our nation.
Same as the Time report that nuclear bombs were to fall on New York, conveniently omitting the source was not credible and had FAILED three lie detector tests.
To: OldFriend
From what Ms. Rice said, there was a LOT more in the report, and yes, the LAT chose one tiny portion to headline -- and, I presume, did it in a way that was guaranteed to sell the most papers, but Ms. Rice did not say that last part.

Brit spanking Juan but good!:-)
To: Alas Babylon!
FNS--in the roundtable, Brett just called Juan on the difference between Pali attacks and Israeli responses...said journalists referring to Israeli responses as "murder" is wrong and said Pali attack Israeli citizens, whereas Israel attacks military/police (not civilians).

NUMBERS FROM FOX & TONY SNOW
SNOW: 45 EYE BLINKS DURING INTERVIEW
EDWARDS: 2500+ EYE BLINKS DURING INTERVIEW
Edwards "looks good" but he lies badly.
To: Alas Babylon!
Off topic but CBSs Sunday Morning is doing a show on the 6 month anniversary of 9/11. For the most part pretty good. But of course acccording to them we are in trouble in Afganistan.

Here's an idea for a new combination NewsTalk/Reality show.
Before the Sunday morning guests are questioned, attach them to lie detectors that are monitored on screen at all times during the interview. Have beepers attached, so that each lie sounds a loud, glaring beep. At the conclusion of the program, the host can award the Biggest Liar of the Show award.

I think that would effectively eliminate all Sunday morning talk shows.

Sort of related to the Sunday talk shows, I have FOX News on this morning with their live 'war on terror' programming. Bob Sellers has joined the FOX News team, and I knew he looked familiar. He's a former co-host of nearly all of CNBC's morning programming.
