Poor Daschle, He Just Can't Help Himself
by JohnHuang2
March 1, 2002

Tom Daschle reminds me of the strawman in the Wizard of Oz, "if only I had a brain."

His latest nag must be whipping up howls of frenzied guffaws at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

The conspiracy-minded among us may even start to wonder whether the unremitting Bush-bashing is just a clever ruse, a hoax: Is Daschle secretly on the White House payroll?

He isn't, of course, but given the staggering slew of clumsy, dopey goof-ups of late, just how would things be any different if he was?

The White House couldn't ask for a more inept, a more incompetent adversary than Sen. Daschle. His penchant for faux pas, gaffs and klutziness has left Beltway veterans dumbfounded.

Given his experience in Washington, pundits placed their bets early on Sen. Daschle, the 'seasoned', 'savvy', 'soft-spoken' protégé of Sen. Mitchell over the 'rookie' governor from Texas. Daschle would, in short order, make mince-meat out of "Dubya", or so they thought.

Stick a fork in that "smirking chimp", he's done.

What a difference a year can make. It would be an understatement to say these "geniuses" bet on the wrong horse, given Bush's winning track record thus far.

Daschle's latest imbecility -- he accuses Bush of going off half-cocked and of failing to produce any tangible results, such as nabbing Osama Bin Laden -- set off shock waves in Washington. Could Daschle be this stupid?

Republicans were pinching themselves -- they could scarcely believe Tommy was putting his foot in his mouth, yet again. Daschle's latest flub comes on the heels of a backlash sparked after quibbling with the President's 'axis of evil' label.

Daschle's recklessness is also a signal of panic. Conditioned by doomers and gloomers in think-tanks to expect stinging defeat in Afghanistan, beltway Democrats were stunned by the military campaign's smashing -- and early -- success. They were told the Taliban would fight to the death, that the blood of U.S. servicemen would flow like rivers through the streets in Kandahar. The number of American casualties would climb into the thousands, they were told.

Instead, Democrats had never imagined in their wildest nightmares the doomsday scenario currently unfurling. The Democrat party is a train wreck. Enron was a joke. Democrat "ideas" aren't resonating with voters. The President's still popular as ever, the country's still united.

With elections looming, Democrats are split by warring factions, with hardliners urging party leaders to go to war against the Bush administration, while pragmatists counsel a more middle-of-the-road approach: To wit, lip-service in "support" of the war, while crippling Bush's domestic agenda.

Compounding their political dilemma even further, the economy appears to be on the upswing.

Small wonder the hardliners -- Daschle et al -- are lashing out -- smoldering angry, tone-deaf as ever. Unless the political landscape changes dramatically, Democrats face an uphill struggle just to break-even in November.

I'm wagering they're in for a devastating blow.

But that's just...

My two cents...

Best 2cents ever! Loved it....every word. I am so grrrrrrrrrrrrr right now...your twist on the subject was a welcome reprieve. Hey, the little yokel might as well be on the WH payroll! LOL! Perhaps we should be sending him "Thank You" notes! Hehe

Can't you just see the hardliners sitting in the 'war room' (probably hillary rodham's vipers nest on the hill) trying their old tactics of 'going outrageous', putting the sound bite out there, and then watching what happens.....hoping their minions will rally to the bite and suddenly turn the entire episode (whatever it happens to be) upside down, side ways and every which way but 'how it really is'.

You know, the Orwellian scenario.....Carville was the master. Remember the trail balloon 'Does character really matter?' Sick as it was, it worked, and people actually separated character from the man. Unreal. This time, the sound bite is meant to cast doubt on our war effort, to impact the dumbed down in our society, to cause distress and fear about our war effort...pretty sick stuff, that.

This time however...it is not only backfiring...it will probably hold until election time because we will have successes in the war and I expect we will have a few more terrorist attempts here at home-maybe successful ones. I hope not. But Daschle and hitlery ( Yeah, I kinda think she is in this mix, up to her ugly eyeballs. ALong with carville and the rest of the creepy, actually replusive standard crew. I recognize the insidious and brutality of attempting to separate our nation...her forte as it were. Liberals cannot survive if we are united. Isn't that sad?) have really goofed.

They are begining to look a bit naked around the seams.....the clothes are tattered....falling off...

Howdy Very good commentary sir, but I think you miss the point. Senator Balderdaschle's remarks contain no substantive or constructive criticism with the remotest possibility of perfecting our war effort. His divisive remarks thus serve no public interest whatsoever. Daschwinkle, the bitterly anti American antagonist in charge of the United States Senate, has opened a rift between liberal politicians and the executive branch of the US government in full view of the entire planet in an effort to CREATE an anti war movement which he hopes to ride to the White House. If this sawed off hatemonger had a shred of substance in his asinine remarks my point would be moot, but his remarks are specious, valueless in any conceivable application to public policy. At the very moment that US servicemen are dying in battle, safeguarding the American public from those who would crush and incinerate thousands of innocent American men, women, and children, this insult to the greatest nation in Earth history gives aid and comfort to our enemies on the battlefield. Take heart, rabid, goat screwing, mass murdering forces of evil, Senator Daschle today leads the liberal wing of American politics in opposition to the war effort, just hold out until the lunatic fringe hits the streets in an effort undermine American resolve to survive your jihad.

I heartily endorse your view, but we are not going far enough. Senator balderdaschle has created a divide in the senior leadership of the government of the United States at the very moment we are losing soldiers on the field of battle. He has encouraged our enemies to fight on in hopes of benefitting from growth in the seeds dissent sewn by this craven politician. His remarks serve no national interest, and his partisanship trumps not only his patriotism but also his oath of office. Senator Daschle's actions can only have the effect of increasing American casualties on the battlefield. Where are the calls for his prosecution under sedition laws? Where are calls for his immediate impeachment and removal from office? Do we really want Al Jazeera to publish this signal that, only months into the war on terror, and even as American servicemen fight for their lives, America's resolve has broken? Senator Daschle must be hounded from office.
