U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., told the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations Saturday night that PLO leader Yasser Arafat must stop violence as a means to achieve his goals.
Clinton, previously known as an outspoken supporter of the PLO agenda, said that she held Arafat responsible for the ongoing attacks and violence aimed at innocent Israelis.
"He has failed as a leader to rein in the forces of violence and terrorism," the former First Lady said, adding that his use of force to advance the PLO agenda would not be successful.
Senator Clinton also visited Israeli terror victims in Hadassah Hospital, and stopped at terrorist-massacre site Sbarro's Pizzeria in downtown Jerusalem.
"Americans can learn from the Israelis' example," she said, "who continue to go about their daily lives despite the threat of terrorism."
Ms. Clinton is in Israel as a guest of the Ministry of Tourism. During her husband Bill's tenure as President of the U.S., she came out in support of a Palestinian state even before an official American position had been taken.
The White House decided at the time to distance itself from her comments.
Also visiting Sbarro's today were members of the Japanese Makuya sect, who marched through Jerusalem and held prayers at the restaurant in memory of the terrorism victims.
Yeah!! And I bet he has less love for her, the witch. Dang, hit the wrong key.
How about a couple of them...
"Senator Hillary Condoms Arafat"
What an awful image that is.
Now, Sen. Clinton understands and "respects Isreal".
Can tbis individual be so out of touch>
Can Mr. Bernard Goldbloom be so correct when he wirtes about liberal bias in the media?
And, what could be Sen. H. Cliton's next move?
Seems to me the same can be said of Sharon, whose management of the Palestinian problem has been abyssmal. Arafat is not nearly in the pickle Sharon is. How can Sharon have peace without Arafat? They'll keep Yasser bottled up on the West Bank until they need to resurrect him as a statesman again for a new peace agreement. Meanwhile, Sharon's hands are completely tied in terms of prosecuting a war against the Palestinians because the very delicate coalition which keeps Sharon in power grows more weary of him everyday.
How many Israeli leaders has Arafat waited out? Arafat will remain the de facto head of whatever quasi-government the Palestinians have longer than Sharon will last in Israel. If the Israelis kill Arafat in the meantime, they will be the worse for it, and Arafat knows that.
The root of the problem here is that Israel has done very little to promote pluralism in the form of equal rights for all people within the land that it controls. They have encouraged the Palestinians to adopt terrorist tactics by painting them into a corner whereby the Palestinians have no other means to prosecute a war against occupation. Not that we should support the Palestinians in their pursuit of terror; but the terror festered and grew on land the Israelis fertilized.
Let's look at Israel through the prism of all that we have learned in this country over the past 50 years. Israel is primarily interested in pursuing an ethnically-pure state, and so their situation is untenable; as we discovered in this country some 40 years ago before the 1964 Civil Rights Act. "Separate but Equal" is not a workable approach because it is anathema to Lockean principles, which require color-blindness on the part of government and society. In truth, basic human freedoms have been denied the Palestinians of the West Bank and Gaza for more than four decades. In that time, the Israelis have done practically nothing to integrate the Palestinian people into their society. The Israelis have routinely denied Palestinians liberty and property in times of peace and war, and for no other reason than that they are Palestinian.
We have some experience with such things in this country, and we have had to make some adjustments to eliminate ethnic discrimination. While we still have our problems, I think we are the better for our efforts. The Israelis wish not to have to do that. Fine for them. But not with my money, please.
I feel for the Israelis, but I wish my tax money wasn't going there because I do not think the Israelis have the moral standing to deserve my support. Neither do the Palestinans, but not nearly as much goes to them. Unfortunately, unequivocal support of Israel is a no-brainer for politicians in this country because the Democrats need the Jewish vote and the Republicans need the fundamentalists. And they all need the media. So we only get one side of this story, now including from from Hillary Clinton, who may be the most disingenuous, opportunistic woman on the planet.
Oh yes, Hillary, tell your comrade to stop all the violence. You can show him a better way to overthrow a government, I'm sure of that!
