President Bush strongly urged Chinese President Jiang Zemin to respect religious freedoms
email ^ | 02/22/02 | Timothy Teepell

Yesterday President Bush strongly urged Chinese President Jiang Zemin to respect religious freedoms and consider the Vatican's plea to free Catholic bishops. Then President Bush, in a live televised speech broadcast nationwide, told the people of China that America is a nation "guided by faith" and committed to religious freedom. Here is a quick excerpt from the President's excellent speech.

"America is a nation guided by faith. Someone once called us "a nation with the soul of a church." This may interest you -- 95 percent of Americans say they believe in God, and I'm one of them.

"When I met President Jiang Zemin in Shanghai a few months ago, I had the honor of sharing with him how faith changed my life and how faith contributes to the life of my country.

"Faith points to a moral law beyond man's law, and calls us to duties higher than material gain. Freedom of religion is not something to be feared, it's to be welcomed, because faith gives us a moral core and teaches us to hold ourselves to high standards, to love and to serve others, and to live responsible lives."

Sad and shocking to consider that probably most Gore supporters agree more with Jiang Zemin's perspective on this, than Bush's.

And furthermore, they would deny W's right to speak his conscience to people who would deny that same rights to others.

He wimped out like bushes tend to do. Why didn't he call them evil? Too big a market, too many political contributions riding on not rocking the boat. Either call evil evil or shut the hell up about evil.

You're right...The people in the blue parts of the country were probably horribly embarrassed by what President Bush told the Chinese students.

Wow! That was a fast reply. You must have ESP?? :o)
Thanks!

He says he'll sign it if the Senate doesn't put some crap in it. That means he doesn't expect it to get to him? I think that Daschle will either:

1. Stall the Shays-Meehan bill with the Fifty PLUS other bills he's holding hostage in the Senate.

2. Put some poison in the thing to make sure that it either doesn't pass because Republican Senators vote against it.

If option 2 plays out, then Daschle can claim that the Republicans didn't want Campaign Finance Reform. This will be where Bush starts talkin' over his head directly to the people I hope.

Just thinkin' out loud here. We'll see how it pans out.

He doesn't mention the part where any criticism of an incumbent in public 60 days before an election can get u thrown in prison. To me thats the most tyrannical measure since the income tax.

I have no faith in the courts. You shouldn't take chances on the 1st amendment.

Whatever. He is analyzing the likely effects. Almost no one thinks that 60 day ban thing will stand for a second.
