Rush: Bill Clinton is the Warren G. Harding of Late 20th Century Presidents

Anyone else hear this comparison? I think he (or his friend who told him this) is on the right track. So much Pre-ceded impeached42 (fall of communism, Reagan Economic expansion, Gulf War) and so much will follow i42 (victory over terrorism, Social Security reform, Iraq's fall) that he will be forgotten just like Harding.

He had some things in common with Harding:

In 1891 he married the divorced Florence Kling DeWolfe, five years his senior, the daughter of Marion's leading banker. Neurasthenic, formidably domineering, the Duchess--as Harding called his wife--brought him little domestic happiness, and he established liaisons with other women. His most permanent affair was with Carrie Phillips, the wife of a Marion merchant, with whom he maintained a liaison from 1905 to 1920.

In 1917, Harding formed a connection with Nan Britton, an impetuous young woman, 31 years his junior, formerly of Marion. She visited him from time to time in Washington when he was a senator and even in the White House. Their daughter Elizabeth Ann was born in 1919.

Warren G. Harding was a conservative. His memory should not be smeared by associating it with Clinton.

But this is typical Rush Limbaugh. His knowledge of history begins with the second election of Ronald Reagan.

Would Rush be offended if someone equally ignorant of history likened his propaganda skills to Josef Goebbels? I doubt it, because he's probably never heard of Josef Goebbels.

Sorry, but a lot of us remember President Harding fondly and think that his memory deserves respect.

Didn't Harding die in office? X42 was a two-termer. Hard to imagine 8 years of insignificance. I don't think X42 will be forgotten. I think he will be remembered as a charmer with low morals who presided over a stock boom and the emergence of the Internet, both of which benefitted him politically. History will look back on his foreign policy as impotent in its handling of strikes against the US (the embassies, the Cole, the WTC, Somalia)and inneffective in the Middle East. The impeachment will be remembered. The botched health care plan will be remembered as a big contributor to the GOP takeover of the House. That's the Clinton years in a nutshell.

I know a bit about WH, perhaps not as much as you, but I know what RL was saying. The average Joe knows nothing about him, because in the long run, he was (is) a pretty insignificant President. RL is saying i42 will be the same way.

Actually, there is more to it then that. Harding ran one of the most scandalous administrations in U.S. history. He benefited from a booming economy that he had nothing to do with. His poll numbers were sky high, yet he didn’t do anything to deserve them. The people liked and respected him when he was president, but a few years after he left office, he was thought of as a buffoon. He also had numerous affairs with other women, and then paid them hush money to keep it from getting out. Sound familiar?

Harding served only two years as President. Unfortunately, we cannot say the same of x42.
