Ohno is a class act.

Gold medalist Apolo Anton Ohno of the USA celebrates on the awards stand at the medals ceremony for the Salt Lake 2002 Winter Olympic Games men's 1500m short track in Salt Lake City, February 20, 2002.

and now the sore Loser:

Reuters Photo

Kim Dong-sung of South Korea stands after throwing down his national flag in disgust when judges declared him disqualified for apparently impeding the path of American rival, Apolo Anton Ohno, in the men's 1500 m short track final at the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games, February 20, 2002. Kim crossed the finish line first, with Ohno right behind, but Ohno was awarded the gold when Kim was disqualified.

Short track rules, regulations

Intentionally pushing, obstructing or colliding with another racer calls for the offender's disqualification. Improperly crossing the course -- cross-tracking -- is also prohibited.

Lead skater has the right of way and the passing skater must avoid body contact.

Skaters also are disqualified for changing lanes or altering their course at the finish. Competitors are required to skate in a straight line from the end of the corner to the finish line. Veering inside or outside to maintain the lead is grounds for disqualification.

It is clear to this observer that Ohno is the best passer in the sport. Had the Korean not skated into his line Ohno would have won the race anyway. Seems this Korean team engages in alot of dubious moves hoping they dont get spotted. Ohno was very smart to throw up his arms at that moment so the ref didnt miss the rule-breaker.

Doug Wright on KSL was talking about the alien UFO landing in SLC this afternoon and had callers on the subject. The consensus was that the aliens better have FAA clearance, or they would get shot down, and then we would have an inter-galactic war on our hands. Funniest segment I've heard in awhile by Wright.

Did you hear the Sixty Minutes on CBS will be doing a piece on the SL bid scandal for the Olympics on Sunday night...right opposite the closing ceremonies. And I am so sure CBS will be fair and balanced in their coverage, not...

At least according the the NBC research staff that Costas quoted last night, the result is something that cannot be protested. Too bad, so sad. :-)

Apparently there is a rule, rule 292 in the ISU rule book that rules out any protest after a short track race is called! The rule was put in a few years ago, and I can't believe it was approved. The Korean deserved to DQ'd last night, but he also should be able to appeal. Personally, I think the rule should be changed.

USOC turns over threatening e-mails on Ohno to FBI

02/21/2002 The Associated Press

SALT LAKE CITY - Threatening e-mails regarding short-track speedskating gold medalist Apolo Anton Ohno have been turned over to the FBI for investigation, the U.S. Olympic Committee said Thursday. The threats were received following Ohno's first race of the Olympics, when he won the silver medal in the 1,000 meters after wiping out near the finish line, USOC spokesman Mike Moran said.

Another 16,000 e-mails regarding Ohno, mostly from sources in South Korea, crashed the USOC's internet server early Thursday, Moran said.

Kim Dong-sung's reaction, OTOH, was shameful.

Yep, I agree with that. In the USA you are allowed to burn the flag, now. I bet some of these other countries will stone you, chop your head off, cane you, shoot you, etc. I wonder if he'll get any of that?

Right, that South African white is now an African-American, along with all the Egyptians, Algerians, etc. from North Africa who emigrated here and took up US citizenship. As for me, I am a European-American. Of course that means I could be Hispanic (Spain), caucasian, or Indian (Native European) from Lapland. Are you totally confused now?

I'm predicting a good performance from the unknown Russian?European Champion Volchkova tonight, these events sometimes have a person coming from nowhere figuring prominently in the finish.

D. Scarlett turned me on to her at the European Championships, great jumper no fear like Baiul before the drugs and booze.

One would expect the Koreans to be upset about it, but I haven't heard much protest.

He threw the Korean flag down once, picked it up, and threw it down a second time. He knew he fouled Ohno. It was obivous in the overhead replay. So, he cheated and then insulted his countryman by his flag behavior.

When you think about the fact that we're actually putting our armed forces in harm's way in his country to protect that flag, we have as much right to protest that behavior as his fellow countrymen. JMO.

I agree with your last post 100%. And if Hughes medals, I will consider retiring from my high-paying armchair quarterback position here at the company.

BTW, nothing is pukier than hearing Scott Hamilton say....."yyyESSSSSS!"

Sounds like some guy seen walking into a gay bar in a leather speedo.

What I'm really hoping for is that Sasha will come out first and WOW the crowd and the judges with a technically difficult routine skated with speed and passion. Her "Carmen" routine she skated at Nationals is pretty damn good. If she upgrades her opening passes to triple-triple, it will get interesting.

That will really put the pressure on both the favorites to come up with the goods.

I saw Oksana Baiul being interviewed the other night. She was so young in the Olympics, and looks so different now, much more hardened. Alcohol and drugs will do that...

I think the skating order tonight is Sasha Cohen, Michelle Kwan, and Irina Slutskaya. I don't know when Sarah Hughes will skate.

I knew she had a drinking problem that was supposedly under control. I didn't know about the drugs.
What's she doing now? Is she skating? Is she married? Been in Playboy? etc?

Now I am trying to remember about the drugs. I thought she tested positive for something when she was pulled over for the DUI. I think she is still single, um, I don't really follow her career.
