Voting On Lies And Misinformation
Sheriff Michael E. Cook 02.13.02

Well the people here in good old Oregon are upset once more. It now looks like the court will decide if our assisted suicide law makes it or not, based on the Constitution. I hear the same thing every day, "The people passed it so it should stand." Well the people have no right to pass an Unconstitutional law, just like our elected representatives have no right to pass one. So if it can't pass the muster then it must go away.

Oregon has many problems with our initiative process and I don't want to go into how it should be fixed now. The main problem is that those who don't trust government don't want to lose this system because they have a vehicle to get things before the voters that the Legislature will not act on. I hear them say it over and over, that if they won't listen to us and do it, then we will do it for them. One of our Senators, Ginny Burdick, used this system to saddle the people of Oregon with an Unconstitutional law on gun checks because she couldn't get the Legislature to pass what she wanted. Then instead of everyone in Oregon having equal say, the three our four counties with the population were able to dictate to the rest of Oregon. Therein lies the problem.

This nation was set up as a Republic, not a Democracy, for this very reason. I say it over and over and hope that everyone will understand it again like our founders did. Many people vote for the wrong reasons or because someone has brain washed them into believing something is bad. Look at what happened in Oregon over hunting Bear and Cougar with Hound Dogs. The animal right people made it look like this terrible thing, with money from all over America donated to get this passed in Oregon. All the people in the big cities, who have no idea about how valuable a tool this is for controlling predators in Oregon, voted for it based on some lies and misinformation put out by a bunch of animal rights whacko's. I still think that this law should be challenged because of the single issue requirement of our Constitution in Oregon and see if it can be overturned.

The voter in this day and age is not as informed and up to date on issues as they should be. They can be swayed so easily to vote for the wrong things. If you don't believe that then tell me why a draft dodging, womanizing president like Clinton could be elected, not once but twice to the highest office in the land. Then look at the map of the last election, the red and blue. It is easy to see where the power is in the population and who voted for Bush and how many voted for Gore. The red zone being the largest land mass tells it all. The problem is the same in the United States as it is right here in Oregon. The population in the small city areas control the vote. That is why a democracy doesn't work. The life experience and knowledge is different in the city and rural areas. There is no way to educate the voters in both areas to make good sound decisions for both. You can't spend enough money, or get the information to enough people. You will never be able to make the voter interested enough to get involved and learn the truth. It's a challenge just to get them to vote, one of the most important rights and freedoms we have.

So those special interest groups do the one thing they know will get the average uninformed voter to vote their way, emotional appeal. It works and we get stupid laws passed that do no one any good.

Here are a few truths that the voter can't change. You can't save old trees. They die and return to the soil just like people. If you don't control predators with all the tools available, then they will eat the same food you do or eat you. You must have people who live and grow food on the land so that you can eat. Moving everyone into the cities will not allow anyone to raise food so everyone will starve, or become predatory eaters of human flesh. Last but not least, this is America and we are a free people with rights. We have these rights so that we can be the greatest nation in the world. This is the most important thing that we pass on, Freedom. With freedom we can grow more food and prosper beyond any other nation and that you can take to the bank. Please make informed choices from now on.

God Bless America.

Why is it that most of the innate intelligence in this country is west of the Mississippi.

The land is an stern teacher. Once you are outside a city, you have to face that. It's about hard choices an urban dweller doesn't have to confront. You can only do so much.

My dad had a theory that the insanity in a city depends upon its rleative proximity to large bodies of water. San Francisco, New York, Seattle, Portland, New Orleans, Miami...

That's only true if you discount the left coast.

Oh, it's just that Pennsylvania keeps bringing the average down. You know, the Pennsylvania Dutch and their noodles and all of that. ;)

Okay, I'll strike at your fly, you cast out on the water with this quote, "My dad had a theory that the insanity in a city depends upon its rleative proximity to large bodies of water. San Francisco, New York, Seattle, Portland, New Orleans, Miami..."

Please explain to a poor old Grampa, what your dad meant by insanity being close to large bodies of water?

LOL!

I'm not sure I'd touch that one even with YOUR ten-foot pole!

I have no idea what he meant, but then I think he didn't either.

My Dad felt that the high suicide rates for people living in SF and Seattle was simple. They had run to the West away from reality and their problems and couldn't go any further due to the Pacific Ocean or Puget Sound. Since, they couldn't run West any more, they were stuck with their unresolved problems and offed themselves.

My Grand Dad, who thought like I do, had a simpler answer. Most of those commiting suicide in SF or Seattle were Godless, communists or socialists. One day they woke and realize what losers they were and then offed them selves.

History would probably show that my Grand Dad was right!

I'm not so sure, Dave. How does your Grand Dad's theory explain New York, Boston, or New Orleans?

I like the water theory better, but then what does that say about Cairo?

I'm soooo confused!

My Grand Dad didn't care for NYC and Boston either. I never heard him comment about the suicide rate.

He love the New Orleans area. One of his brothers had wild rice and regular rice farms in the Arkrazy and La. areas. He would visit his bro and go eat the great Cajun food that used his Brother's rice! He called his visits work, and he would wink at me when no one was looking.

He and his bro would load up a truck of rice and make sales calls, demos and then enjoy the food while working so hard.

Our grocery store finally started to carry the various Zatarain cajun spices. They bring back some great memories. Our favorite is the Zatarain Creole Seasoning. Try it with some fresh Dungess Crabs (a lot of it)! It is very reasonable re its cost and incredible re the zing!
