Didn't Mac's CEO make some really stupid statement back in the 80's that Mac was only going to cater to the "best" people and only sell expensive stuff to the elite clientele?Oldsmobile said something similar earlier this Century. Look who owns them now.

While Mac closely controlled their OS and refused to license clones the MS inferior OS took over the market. Bad business decisions can doom a superior product. Remember VHS vs. Beta?

I'd just like to put one thing on record here: IMHO VHS was the better format. Did Beta have better video and audio quality? Absolutely. But VHS had the big advantage that mattered: size. Beta couldn't keep a decent sized movie on one tape, VHS could. For home temporary TV use (tape now - watch later - repeat) Beta never had a thing over VHS.

See it all depends on how you look at things. If you're seeking the best video and audio resolution Beta was the way to go. But most people were seeking convenience, they don't want to tapes part way through a movie, they want Roots to fit on as few tapes as possible (I think the age of the mini-series pushed video machines heavily, most people can't take prime-time off for a whole week, you'll always have something to do, but with a video tape machine it's no problem). For what the market was looking for VHS was the superior format.
