[history]
EMPHIS - Tennessee expected resistance when it relaxed its requirements for obtaining a driver's license last year. But concerns about proper forms of identification after the Sept. 11 attacks have thrown the state's licensing system into turmoil.
Four states - Connecticut, Florida, South Carolina, and Arkansas - have rescinded reciprocity agreements, meaning they will no longer accept Tennessee licenses as a primary form of identification.

''We're in a position where anyone can come to Tennessee and get a driver's license,'' she said. ''It's a bad situation.'' Unless you are a U.S. Citizen who doesn't want to make your social security number visible.

'Just providing a `driver's certificate' for those without Social Security cards "Social Security cards may not be used for identification"(federal law)
To: waterstraat
Social Security cards are not used for ID, and drivers licenses (at least in the last dozen years) do not display the SSN, but Tenn is so lax about verifying the identity of license applicants that, without some official documents which only the real person would have - such as birth certificate or SSN, it is very likely that people could get licenses in phony names.

In light of September 11, any legislator who supports this insane policy should be voted out forthwith.

Think of the potential voting blocs that these other states are passing up by having stricter liscense requirements. Until 9/11 came up the illegals were assumed to be Bush's majority in his second term election. This was the biggest reason given by different officials for his courting the Latinos, Presidente Vincente Fox, and open immigration.

In Minnesota, all one needs in order to obtain a driver's license is a birth certificate and a college transcript.
And I had those two items stolen from my parents home in 1996.

You can chose to LEAVE your SS# off your DL in Tennessee. I chose that route as I didn't want every teeny bopper or possible felon clerk where I worte a check to have access to my SS#.

Governor Don Sundquist and others supporting the licensing law said it would ensure that workers who would otherwise drive regardless of their legal status would learn road laws, obtain insurance, and drive more responsibly if they had driver's licenses. After making the above statement, the governor was led away by his two white coated attendants.

The point I was making is the U.S. citizens are
required to divulge their SSN to get a Tennessee driver's license. Illegal aliens are not. So we aren't even
equal to illegal aliens.
As far as having some grocery clerk swipe your SSN, I'd trust the average checker at Winn-Dixie or Kroeger a lot further than I would your average bureaucrat in a driver's license bureau.
To: sarcasm
We didn't have these problems years ago when we had control of our borders and immigration.
We don't control America anymore - the illegals do.

Tennessee is reaping what they have sown.
