Don't MAIL Your Letters to Congress or General Government

This post is based upon a discussion with a high-level bureaucrat that I had yesterday. I had sent him a package a month ago that has not yet arrived. It was Priority Mail, hand-stamped by the USPS clerk. He told me that the que for irradiation of incoming mail is so long that he is still getting Christmas Cards. Your letters to Congress on specific bills may not be getting to their destinations on time. Fax or email them instead (a fax is a legal time stamp).

I don't usually put this kind of thing up but I hate to see FReepers wasting their laudable efforts. I would appreciate confirmation on this from anyone working in general government.

Good information for those of us who regularly correspond with our congress critters. I'm more likely to call their local offices, but your suggestion leads me to think writing to their local offices, rather than Washington, might be a good idea.

Thanks for the heads-up. I was hoping to send a family photo of us with W to him for an autograph. Now, I wonder if I can find an address for the TX White House.

Not only that, but I was unaware that overnight mail to certain DC zip codes is still BANNED.

I learned this only when sending something to DC via the US Postal Service, and the clerk had to double check the zip code before allowing me to send my package.

I assume the "banned" zip codes are to the White House, Congress, and perhaps the Federal Gov't.

My company purchases a subscription services from the Library of Congress. At renewal time this year, we were contacted and told they are not accepting any mail at all any more. We had to send our payment by Fed X.
