Harris fund raising tops $1 million in first campaign report Thursday, January 31, 2002 Associated Press SARASOTA Florida Secretary of State Katherine Harris has already raised more than $1.1 million for her congressional race, according to her first campaign finance report. Harris' fund raising at this early point in the campaign is already about four times what current U.S. Rep. Dan Miller raised in his last race for the seat. Harris has said she intends to raise about $2 million in her bid to replace Miller, a Republican who is retiring. Harris, whose pivotal role in the 2000 presidential election drew her nationwide attention, faces political newcomer Chester Flake in the Republican primary. Three Democrats, none of whom have held elected office, are vying for their party's nomination. Details of Harris' fund raising from the 350-page report filed with the Federal Election Commission late Tuesday were not immediately available. A four-page summary of the report provided by her campaign shows she has already spent more than $500,000 since July. About $1 million of the contributions came from individuals, while another $95,200 came from political action committees and less than $1,300 from the Republican Party. Harris formally announced her entry into the race in October, following it with a November fund raising letter that told supporters she needs to defend herself against "unrelenting" attacks for handling of the election dispute. Campaign spokeswoman Rori Patrise Smith said Harris will begin campaigning once the state legislative session is over at the end of March. Smith said despite the substantial financial edge Harris enjoys in the race, she will still conduct a grass-roots, "door-to-door" campaign along with about 200 volunteers. "We are busy here just being aggressive with our grass-roots campaign," Smith said. Tait Sye, a Florida Democratic Party spokesman, acknowledged there is great disparity between Harris' ability to raise money and the Democratic candidates'. The Democratic field includes the Rev. Charles McKenzie Jr., lawyer Jan Schneider, a former law school classmate of Bill and Hillary Clinton, and former local television reporter Candice Brown McEleya. "Katherine Harris is no stranger to money her extravagant spending was a mark of her tenure as Secretary of State," he said. "She has always spent a lot of money in anything she's done. "A million dollars is a lot of money and she has a lot of money. I don't know how this is going to play out." Carl Forti, a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, said Harris needs the substantial campaign funds to defend herself from attacks. "You don't want to let your reputation get dragged through the mud," Forti said. "While she doesn't have to defend herself in order to win, it's rare in politics to let your opponents go unchecked."
Her victory this November will be the sweetest of all. Watching Maxine Waters gag when Katharine is sworn in will be a treat for all Freepers!
Be Seeing You,
Chris
Many attacks on her were false or distorted. The madia was so desperate in getting her they actually resorted to making up things or resorting to the absurd. I didn't hear those who complained about her looks complain about Janet Reno, Rev. JJ, or Greenspan's.
While this has died down, the media still resorts to petty or false attacks or digs, such as an article in October? 2001 issue of "Allure" magazine. Consequently, at least one reader cancelled her subscription.
These closing remarks by the GOP spokesman:
"Carl Forti, a spokesman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, said Harris needs the substantial campaign funds to defend herself from attacks."
"You don't want to let your reputation get dragged through the mud," Forti said. "While she doesn't have to defend herself in order to win, it's rare in politics to let your opponents go unchecked."
And this one by the Harris Campaign:
"Smith said despite the substantial financial edge Harris enjoys in the race, she will still conduct a grass-roots, "door-to-door" campaign along with about 200 volunteers."
I believe this is illustrative of their continued bias (they are owned by the NYTimes) and I intend to point out these omissions to one of their editors.
BTW, didn't you used to be someone else?
VICTORY WILL BE WONDERFUL!
What, did they attack her make-up again? I know most of the attacks on her were silly and petty, but it can't be fun. She's aobviously very resilient to run for congress, putting herself in the line of fire again.
Go, Ms. Harris!

Personally, while I think there's plenty about Janet Reno to criticize, I never criticized her appearance. And I didn't really like it when others did.
