Illegal Immigrants Seek Access to Higher Education
Nebraska News - Around Nebraska ^ | January 22, 2002 | John Fulwider

OMAHA - Children of illegal immigrants seeking higher education in Nebraska are in a tough spot: They can't get federal financial aid, and at some schools they don't qualify for in-state tuition.

The result: A double hit for high-school graduates looking to achieve the American Dream by living better than their parents did. Affording college is tough enough without the federal aid so many of their peers rely on, but they're positively priced out of the market having to pay out-of-state tuition. For the children of Nebraska's ever-growing Hispanic population, the choices can be bleak: join their parents at the meatpacking plants or other illegal employment, or head back to Mexico and face the poverty their parents came to Nebraska to escape.

The Nebraska Legislature's Education Committee today will consider a bill addressing the in-state tuition difficulty. A public hearing on LB955 is set for 2:10 p.m. in Room 1525 of the State Capitol.

"There are two primary issues," said Jack Martin, special projects director for FAIR. "One is why are we educating illegal aliens at the university level when after they graduate, they cannot legally take a job in the United States? And the second issue is one of finite resources. Why are you spending money to educate those who are not legal residents instead of those who are legal residents?"

Good question Mr. Martin!!

Olvera is squeaking by financially at UNO now; her money from two scholarships runs out at the end of this semester.
"I'm searching," she said.

Try searching for a part time job to pay your bills like a lot of American kids do.

Why is this even an issue? They are in violation of the law.

No amnesty, this side of the border!

The whole consideration of the immigration issue has been distorted by the politics of the Left. For a more traditional American view, see Immigration & The American Future.

By the way, they have Universities in most countries. Why don't these folks just persuade their parents to take them home?

Duh. Any reason they can't get a higher education back home in Mexico? I think the Nebraska State Legislature should let them attend university in the state on the condition Americans are extended like access to higher education in Mexico. Let's see the Atzlan lobby try to wriggle out of that one.

Omaha Nebraska! Welcome aboard the immigration "free for all".

Do you think Nebraska will welcome, support, and encourage this immigration disaster like our Federal government does?

Since the "Operative Words" are illegal immigrants the US Government should provide them access to Edcuation. Oh, did I mention it should be in thier OWN COUNTRY and not in a country they Illegaly entered. Send them back and protect our boundries.

Illegal aliens are ILLEGALLY in this country. They should be rounded up and put in jail until they can be deported. If anyone identified themselves as "undocumented" they should be gone without hesitation.

Imagine that - denying illegal aliens their piece of 'American Dream'.

The humanity...

They will have to or else the federal government will place mandates on them.

We had to lower our blood alcohol level to .08 to meet their whims or else lose our highway funds. They will make Nebraska an offer that they can't refuse.

There are two sets of rules/laws/standards out there. One for them and one for us. Needless to say we are on the short end of the stick!!

I thought they were ILLEGAL! As in ILLEGAL ALIEN! Their illegal alien parents want their illegal alien children to have the same rights as their US born (14th Amendment) children.

Is it possible these children (ie, 17 and older) are citizens, and cannot get financial aid because their parents are not official residents of the state, and cannot file income reports? You can argue about whether children born here of illegal immigrants should be citizens, but as it stands now they are.

The liberal solution would be to declare them emancipated minors, or unsupported by family, and then the whole works of financial aid can be showered upon them.

Anyway, citizen or non-citizen is a distinction not made in the article.

Its seems to be a big issue now as the two beltway parties are vying for their votes.

We have an on going massive invasion of millions, taking jobs, driving down wages, choking off our social services causing higher taxes, filling our jails, standing room only in emergency rooms, schools over crowded, land fills full, freeways bumper to bumper, while a million more a year invade our nation and defecate on our sovereignty.

As the President of the United States gives speaches in Spanish as many Republicans stand and cheer.

OMAHA - Children of illegal immigrants seeking higher education in Nebraska are in a tough spot:

Refering to Maria Olvera:

she almost got kicked out when officials discovered her residency status.

It is pretty obvios to me that they are referring to illegal aliens.
