People from all over Virginia will assemble in Richmond on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, January 21, 2002, to share their concern and sadness over the lives lost and forever changed by incidents of gun violence in Virginia.
The participants' hope and goal is to personally express and graphically demonstrate to Virginia's lawmakers that every life touched by gun violence matters, and that Virginians support sensible legislation to curb the instances of gun violence in the Commonwealth.
Viginians (sic)Against Handgun Violence would like to encourage you to attend this event to show your support!
Here's the day's agenda:
8:30 am - Meet at 701 E. Franklin St. (2 blocks west of Capitol) in the basement conference room for legislative update.
9:30 am - Walk 2 blocks to SW corner of Capitol Square, sidewalk outside of the Bell Tower. Once there, we'll organize for the silent march and vigil. We have 97 pairs of gloves which we'll carry on clothes line, representing the 97 children and youths (aged 19 and under) who were killed with guns in Virginia in 1998 (the most recent year for with we have complete statistics).
9:45 am - We'll walk the short distance to the Bell Tower for our vigil.
10:30 am - At the conclusion of the vigil, we'll proceed to the General Assembly building to meet with our representatives and lobby them on behalf of this issue.
12 noon - Break for lunch
1:00 pm - Resume lobbying
3:00 pm - Attend Militia and Police (M & P) Committee meeting. (M & P is the committee that hears nearly all the firearms-related bills). The committee usually meets until 5 or 5:30 pm.
Representatives from various organizations as well as concerned individuals will be on hand to provide balanced perspective and accurate information on the issue of gun-violence prevention.
