FReeper names explained
My curiousity | Now | Yours truly

Posted on 01/18/2002 5:03:35 PM PST by Come get it

Some FReepers have nicks that are obvious in their origin, others don't. I've seen several that probably have interesting stories behind them.

I thought it would be cool to see where FReepers get their handles from. If you don't like this topic, DON'T POST HERE! No one forces you to read this. I'm sure other people may be interested. If I'm the only one, let me know so I can crawl away in shame.

`Know where you're coming from.

Not a bad place, but made to seem so by all sorts of wonderful folks.

I remain Dave in (ugh) Eugene.

Love the name, and a GREAT story to go with it. It's amazing the things God will do to show His love for us. I wish some others on this forum would at least give Him a chance before turning their backs.

I love eagles myself. You know how most people have a fascination with certain animals (like my uncle who has his entire house decorated with frog things), well, mine is with eagles. They're all over my house. I got one for Christmas that is a music box. It is an eagle sitting on a rock with two American flags on either side, and it plays God Bless America.

Thanks for sharing your story.

It's amazing the things God will do to show His love for us. I wish some others on this forum would at least give Him a chance before turning their backs. I know what you mean. Maybe that is a large part of why we are here!! Maybe someone will read my post and it may alter their thinking a bit! ;-)

My step-son, Matthew, gave me an eagle on the liberty bell scultpure for Christmas! :-)

I am often referred to by career politicians. I am mean and I hate their stinking guts. The 77 is a gambling thing.

Former elite gymnast and all around ass kicker.

Also, a fitting nod to Benicio Del Toro in "The Usual Suspects", police interrogation scene.

Thomas More was recognized throughout early sixteenth-century Europe as one of the great lawyers, Christian humanists, and classical scholars of his day. He rose from humble origins to achieve the highest political and judicial office of England, second only to that of the king. He became Chancellor in 1529, at the age of fifty-one. As Chancellor, More concentrated on two major tasks: (1) streamlining and improving the judicial system; (2) addressing and personally refuting errors which he considered seditious and destructive of both state and church. In the assessment of Tudor historian John Guy, More made substantial contributions in this latter area, reforming the legal system far more effectively than Cromwell would later, in his far reaching legislative reforms of the 1530s.

More was Chancellor for only thirty-one months. He resigned on May 16, 1532, the day after Henry VIII and Cromwell manipulated the Parliament to take away the traditional freedom of the Church, a freedom that had been written into English law since the Magna Carta. At issue was the survival of the Church as well as the nature of law and the scope of the state's legitimate authority.

He was betrayed by his so called friend, Cromwell, imprisoned and eventually executed for his views. Before his execution, More was heavily pressured by his family and friends to sign the oath accepting Henry VIII as the Supreme Head of the Church in England. He is said to have quoted Christ by saying, "What profits a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul!"

That all lawyers and politicians should be as ethical as More, what a different world we would live in.
