FReeper names explained
My curiousity | Now | Yours truly

Posted on 01/18/2002 5:03:35 PM PST by Come get it

Some FReepers have nicks that are obvious in their origin, others don't. I've seen several that probably have interesting stories behind them.

I thought it would be cool to see where FReepers get their handles from. If you don't like this topic, DON'T POST HERE! No one forces you to read this. I'm sure other people may be interested. If I'm the only one, let me know so I can crawl away in shame.

cyber-
pref.
Computer: cyberpunk. cyberpunk: Heroes, Outlaws and Hackers on the Computer Frontier
Computer network: cyberspace. Computer Frontier

[From cyber(netic).

Cowboy \Cow"boy`\ (-boi`), n. An adventurous hero.

Cowboy
[Sun, from William Gibson's cyberpunk SF] Synonym for hacker. It is reported that at Sun this word is often said with reverence.

777 - Seven is Gods Perfect number and '77 is the year I was born. Also, Isaac Air Freight's "...777 Pearly Gates". My future address.

I am the little guy standing up for himself and for others (think Pale Rider). I have Old Fashion (Think God, Family and Country) values and 21st century skills. I fight my range war in Cyberspace (the Computer Frontier), and though I never look for a fight, all be damned if I'll look the other way while my country is overridden by vermin.

Besides, I am a I.T. Consultant and I wear Cowboy Boots (Can't wear my Wranglers to Clients)!

Yes there was. All US Navy and Coast Guard ships that served in the Tonkin Gulf and their crews are members. Jim Robinson is also a member.

I am too.
Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club member since April 72

Sorry, I just can't believe that. 300 feet maybe but NRA Pistol Masters can't do things like that nor are they expected to. In Highpower Rifle the 300 yard target has a 9 ring that's 13 inches in diameter. In order to just SEE the target, the black is 19 inches in diameter. The black's measurement is 1/16 of an inch at the end of a rifle barrel. That means that you would be an expert if you could hit a 13 inch target in the sitting position with a match grade rifle. The only way I was able to hit a tree at 225 yards is because I didn't have to worry about elevation so much because the tree stump was fairly long.

This other person claimed that he shot tar buckets at 440 yards. I noticed that neither of you are shooting in the Free Republic Postal Match. Again, sorry. I hope there's no hard feelings but I can't believe you.

Played football at the University of Oklahoma, starring in football, wrestling, and basketball, while maintaining a 3.9 GPA in Organic Chemistry and Theology. Knew Bud Wilkinson personally.

In Freshman year, returned an intercepted pass for winning touchdown in '68 Orange Bowl.

Was named MVP on '75 National Championship team.

Was named consensus All-American three seasons, and named to All-Big Eight team five seasons.

After a stint in the Navy flying F-4 Phantoms and teaching Hapkido to SEAL teams, returned to team as Academic Counselor, before finishing PhD in Psychology, with my final thesis being "Things to come: Walter Mitty Complex in the 21st Century."

My appreciation for Presidents 41 and 43 is exceeded only by my quest for the best attributes of the fairer half of the human species.

E Clampus Vitus is both a historical and fraternal organization. Although ancient in origin, it reached its peak during the tumultuous days of The Great California Gold Rush. A Member of E Clampus Vitus is commonly called a "Clamper." The latter-day members of this organization, which boasts between 75,000 and 80,000 active members, attempt to uphold the traditions of fellowship, good spirits, and fun. Like their forbearers, the modern "Clampers" are dedicated to the care and protection of the Widow* (known as "Widders" to Clampers) and the Orphan. * But especially the Widders.

Every pirate is a little bit crazy. You, though, are more than just a little bit. Two things complete your pirate persona: style and swagger. Maybe a little too much swagger sometimes -- but who really cares? Arr!

LOL

So, um, do you have a sister?
