FReeper names explained
My curiousity | Now | Yours truly

Posted on 01/18/2002 5:03:35 PM PST by Come get it

Some FReepers have nicks that are obvious in their origin, others don't. I've seen several that probably have interesting stories behind them.

I thought it would be cool to see where FReepers get their handles from. If you don't like this topic, DON'T POST HERE! No one forces you to read this. I'm sure other people may be interested. If I'm the only one, let me know so I can crawl away in shame.

Arthalion is an compound word from Tolkien's elven dictionary.

Artha- Means high or noble.
Lion- Means leader.

Years ago I did a bit of roleplaying and came up with Arthalion ("Noble Leader") for a lawful-good prince character I was playing. The name stuck, and I still use it for various things to this day.

Correction accepted, second "T" is common around here. Is there an Engand any more? Those of us that went West before the Union tend to think that England has a meaning, how ever wrong we maybe.

Cool site! My name came up as Dread Pirate Kidd. Interesting that it comes up with a reference to one of my all-time favorite movies.

Could that be "The Princess Bride"? My name came up as Mad Sam Read. But my actual screen name is an anthropological reference.

Actually, I seemed to remember there were pirates in Hamlet, but didn't remember much about it. So I did a search and came up with one of those online summaries which included this:

After Hamlet leaves, Laertes returns from France, enraged over Polonius' death. Ophelia reacts to her father's death with utter madness and eventually falls in a stream and drowns, further angering Laertes. En route to England, Hamlet finds the orders and changes them to order Rosencrantz and Guildenstern killed, as does occur, though Hamlet is kidnapped by pirates one day later. The pirates return Hamlet to Claudius (for a ransom), and Claudius tries one last attempt to eliminate Hamlet: he arranges a sword duel between Laertes and Hamlet....

But I don't remember any details about it.

Okay, Act 4, Scene 6, a sailor brings a letter to Horation from Hamlet. The letter reads:

'Horatio, when thou shalt have overlooked this, give these fellows some means to the king: they have letters for him. Ere we were two days old at sea, a pirate of very warlike appointment gave us chase. Finding ourselves too slow of sail, we put on a compelled valour, and in the grapple I boarded them: on the instant they got clear of our ship; so I alone became their prisoner. They have dealt with me like thieves of mercy: but they knew what they did; I am to do a good turn for them. Let the king have the letters I have sent; and repair thou to me with as much speed as thou wouldst fly death...

Holy crap. You got me. I had no idea. I've read the play twice and just didn't retain that at all.

Well, it's a really, really small reference. I don't know how I remembered, myself.

"backup" is rather straightforward. It's the account I use when my other identities get suspended.

haha.

(just kidding... sort of...)

My wife has metastatic cancer. She and I visited California a few times in the last few years and The Muir Woods, north of San Francisco is now her favorite spot on earth.

She has asked me to spread her ashes there, when the time comes, and of course, I told her I would.

"I wasn't even thinking about shotgunning.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. we throw the birds out to a dirt bank that's 60 yards away and shoot them on the ground with pistols.

Isn't selling a 1911 sacrilege? BIG TIME, YEP!

Had a baby... (well wife did) Had to pay doctor. = Sell Toys.

btw, I shouldn't have taken off the humility switch on my html about my shotgunning.... I missed so many ducks this morning it wasn't even funny. We still did better than the other two groups, but I should have limited out very quickly.

Pride cometh before a bad hunt.

I was always the No.1 gunner on an artillery piece. No one else want to get dirty. I think it was because they didn't want to lose their hand.

Comes from several widely disconnected sources all running berzerker like into my head clamoring for attention at once, lo on many moons ago when I first went online.
I've been accused of being immortal and unkillable (Some have tried).
I've been accused of being undead (Ever have a crucifix held up at you? No? Hmm must be me then.)
I've been called many things, especially a 'Dark Lord' by both friends and foes.
I also admire Shakespear.
I also have a partially written (Highly fractious) story scribbled down in which the main character has been given a name along the lines of "Karsh Kentu dar' she'ar" (Dark lord, the dark{black} willed. Translation: Headstrong pest). Probably never finish the story...
Thus when I dropped into Rysher TV chat back in '95 I was Darksheare, Late of Kentothe.

That flaky pirate name thing calls me 'Black Jack Kidd'. Grrr. Why is that person over there holding a crucifix at me? *Disappears into a cloud of smoke, Larfing all the while*

Hint - Rosie and PETA disapprove!
