Stalinsky is bemoaning the replacement of some false history with other false history. He doesn't realize that the "historectomy" took place in the late 1860's and he was indoctrinated with its replacement.

Until he corrects his own misperceptions of the ideals on which the US was founded, he doesn't really know what to moan about.

Attucks was killed by British soldiers during a demonstration about five years or so before the DoI was written. John Adams defended the British soldiers who fired into the crowd of demonstrators and they were acquitted. Ol' Crispus's death was only part of the brutality by British troops that eventually led to the War of Independence. He wasn't the first casualty by any means.

The union/government near monopoly control of education should be ended with the privatization of schools with a type of GI Bill for children. It is the civil rights issue of this Century. COMPETITION WILL INSURE FREEDOM.

So would I. I had my last U.S. History class at a public high school about 5 years ago. I would consider it to be an accurate representation of U.S. history, without a lot of the politically correct junk that people complain about. (Of course, by now I've had plenty of time to forget parts of it, but that's a completely different issue.)

For the record I am a blood and soil conservative quite unlike the author who when speaking of ancestors is probably two generations removed from the family debate between Stalin or Trotsky as the ideal leader. I am less then impressed by the authors concern for American history as one being about ideals as it is my view that the author is using American history for his own ideological purposes (that being his right) than one of love of nation. Also ftr I am 100% Anglo/Saxon and as far as I am concerned my ancestors landed at Jamestown fought the Indians settled the land fought a devastating war between the States and became a world power amongst many other deeds and misdeeds so with that in mind I have little need for a Johnny come lately and his ideological baggage.

Thanks for filling in the blanks. I remembered that he was NOT at Lexington and Concord, but not the specifics of his death.

I agree with your 'bit-players' comment. We're seeing that more and more - I specifially had the misfortune of seeing it at the Smithsonian museum of American History recently. Was expecting stuff on the Revolution, rise of America, etc and got displays on Pop culture, dresses worn by former first ladies, and an exhibit on global warming. I was so disgusted that I left. How a museum can give equal billing to the original Star Spangled Banner AND a 'phaser' from Star Trek boggles my imagination.

I call it 'Gumping' history (with apologies to Forrest). Dumb it down, and populate it with people whose only claim to fame was that they were there when something happened.

In high school we had some weeks where we studied minority (mostly African-American) history, and a week or so on the demographic breakdown of the USA since the last census. I never really understood why African-American history was considered to be apart from general US history. In retrospect I think that not highlighting the differences of black and white is the best way to achieve a color-blind society.

On a side note, did anyone here actually learn anything about Africa outside of Egypt and the requisite paragraph on the Boer War before they got to college? I didn't know jack about Africa until I took an African history & geography course in my undergrad years.
