Man accidentally shoots himself in 'showdown' with a snowman

WILLARD — A Carter County man accidentally shot himself Monday while practicing his quick-draw on a snowman, Kentucky State Police at Ashland said.

Bob Bowling, 32, of Willard, suffered a gunshot wound to his right upper thigh, according to the KSP's Ashland post.

The incident occurred about 2:55 p.m. at Bowling's residence on Lost Creek, the KSP said.

Bowling initially told the KSP that he had his gun in a holster and that it discharged when he sat down.

However, after being taken to King's Daughters Medical Center, Bowling told Trooper Russ Fannin that the weapon went off while he was quick-drawing on a snowman.

Bowling was released after treatment at KDMC, hospital spokesman Tom Dearing said.

Three years ago, in the next county, a homeowner, after several days oif heavy snow, was rightly concerned about the amount of snow on his roof, and the danger of damage due to "ice damming" ..so he climbed up on the roof of his three story house, rigged a line to pull his snowblower up to the roof, and proceeded to clear the roof of the acumulated snow. During this exercise, he hit an icy patch slid over the side, and fell the three stories rto the ground. He escaped any injuries due to the fall, as the several feet of piled up snow cushioned his impact, but several seconds after his soft landing, he suffered severe head injuries when the snowblower also slid off the roof and landed atop him..

Darwin award contestant #3?

Actually, no. This creature did not satisfy the prime requirement of being considered for the Darwin award. Darwin award nominees must have removed the possibility of their genes infecting the gene pool.

Please try again next year. ;)

Too bad nobody told him not to put his finger on the trigger until the gun is drawn.

If you consider it, practicing quick draw on a snowman is not such a horrible idea. You have a three dimensional roughly humanoid target that is very good at stopping bullets.

Unfortunatly, pacticing quick draw has always resulted in a number of training casulties. They are not at all that uncommon. I believe that the quick draw is way overrated as a self defense measure, and should either be practiced with an unloaded pistol or with wax bullets.
