"That is why publicly held companies are required to have "independently" audited financial statements. I wonder how independent the auditors were, since they were paid by Enron."
There are at least 10 posts on the topic in recent weeks. All of the info you and others may be looking for are likely on them, 'specially the Auditors "problem".
An Article only Search for -- Enron --- will get you to them.

"I have never discussed, with Mr. Lay, the financial problems of the company," said Bush. Dumbya's slickly parsed statement cries out for an explanation as to which ENE executives, shareholders, consultants, and directors actually discussed ENE's financial problems with him and/or other members of the administration including the Vice President.
Is Enron a cancer growing on the presidency, or what?

Is Enron a cancer growing on the presidency, or what? No. It's hard to make the case that a company had illegal influence in government when all the company has to show for that influence is bankruptcy.

The DUmmies are already salivating over Bush's corpse. They are predicting everything from a Dem sweep in future elections to the entire Bush administration going to prison. I think they are going to be extremely disappointed in their assessment. At this point, the law needs to determine if Enron executives screwed their employees and buggered off with the cash, and if so, their ill-gotten wealth should be rechanneled back to the affected employees and the Enron bigwigs should face jail time. But I fail to see how their past campaign contributions to Bush and Ashcroft (and Daschle, Schumer, etc) will taint the administration. Regardless, prepare for a year or more of expensive lawyers and committees, paid for by us taxpayers, and driven by desperate Democrats.

That's no mean feat, seeing as how our state doesn't exactly abound in oil wells. I have heard that Enron is in the business of Natural Gas, not Oil. Is this true?
And also, that much of these financial problems arose during a period of transition when Enron was divesting itself of gas production, into distribution and marketing of energy.
Can anyone describe briefly just what Enron's business is and if you are particulary knowledgable, why Enron collapsed?

The Enron fiasco is going to hurt Bush. Iran-Contra put Republicans in the wilderness for eight years. How long will they be in the wilderness after Enron?
