IF NEWSPAPERS ARE indeed the first draft of history, Bill Clinton's chance for a favorable reappraisal of his presidency is in trouble.

His supporters have hoped that as time adds perspective, Clinton's personal peccadilloes will shrink in memory, while underappreciated accomplishments will grow in importance.

Ladies and gents, I do believe it's snowing in the lower reaches of Dante's Inferno.

A sweepingly negative column about Bill Clinton on the editorial pages of the Boston Globe?

It is pretty amazing, HG. However, I couldn't help but notice the obligatory "he was distracted by those mean Republicans" statement imbedded herein. One day we may actually see the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth - but probably not from the Globe!

Certainly the ammoniac partisan atmosphere created by then Speaker Newt Gingrich and the Republican Congress contributed.

Gratuitous and indefensible. No editor should let a line like that be slipped in without some sort of expansion on the thought. Is this author writing any columns about the "ammoniac partisan atmosphere" currently being created by Daschle and Co.?

Saying he "slept" is too mild, it doesn't carry the culpability that it should. Sleeping indicates not knowing, and that is exactly where Clinton's culpability lies, he knew the entire extent of the problem, he just wasn't about to rock the boat of his ratings.

The definition of a leader is one who makes hard decisions, unpopular decisions, decisions that may cost him support but he does what he believes is right regardless of that cost. Reagan is a great example and now, thank God, we have another leader in dubya.

With Clinton, then, now and always, it is all about HIM.

Lehigh isn't usually that sloppy. His editor probably had him insert the line into the piece because of standing Globe editorial policy.

How, then, could the White House have failed to respond with more force and focus to Aug. 7, 1998, when truck bombs detonated at US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania killed 244 people and injured thousands more? Two years earlier, as the Times also reports, political adviser Dick Morris had urged Clinton to launch a higher-profile antiterrorism effort. The American people would back measures like federalizing airport security and taking military action against terrorist installations in foreign countries, Morris told Clinton.

Hmmmm, 244 DEAD....80 more than McVeigh got.....Yet, while assesing Culpability, where was The NYSlimes, and the Rest of the News World in making this case as Glaring to the American Public as it should have been.... AT THAT TIME!?!?!?!?!

Annie, I agree with your assesment, but the GLOBE'S mean republican statement rings true with alot of Americans. Im not saying I agree with that mind you. But the problem with the GOP was instead of going after Bubba for the legitimate crimes he committed, ie Chinagate, FBI files etc etc etc. The GOP made the mistake of focusing on the whole sexual pecadillo aspect. The problem there was the most vocal of Clinton's critics didnt have clean hands in that department themselves. Most americans if confronted with the same situation Clinton found himself in, may have acted in the same manner. That was the problem with the hearings, It was more about sex than anything else, in the perception of most americans.

Bill C to his Harlem conclave: "Spin it faster, guys! They're still not buying it. Spin it fast, prove Einstein right! If we spin it fast enough, we can go back in time...or at least muddle the history books! I need a legacy, so spin, dammit, spin!"

There's blame aplenty for the lost period and the lost focus.

Spare me. The blame lies with Clinton, and those who voted against removing him from office for his proven felonies.

I didn't believe it was the Globe at first...then I took a look at the context. All this tragedy and the writer's point of view centers around how it affects B.J. Billy's "legacy." Yep. It's the Globe all right.

Yes, I understand that. However, inherent in that arguement is the fact that Billybob was incapable of focusing on the interests of this country due to the GOP "antics." Is this really what they want to admit to? (IMHO he was in fact, really that incompetent - and worse.)

Best part of this is that Morris, who hate's Stepphie with a passion, uses Stepphies own words against him. But then Stepphie can always say he lied about himself in his own book.........

Morris is determined to destroy clinton and everyone around him..........makes one wonder what is going on and whether Morris is going to need the witness protection program before too long.

Agree! He couldn't help trying to blame the Republicans, and Gingrich by name, but there is a glimmer of hope when one more liberal presstitute finds the I-X42 kneepads a little less comfortable.

Clinton's Legacy = The 911 Attacks + Impeachment + Treasonous Sale of National Defense Secrets to the ChiComs

But in retrospect, Bill Clinton did face a dangerous foreign adversary. He was president when Al Qaeda went global and started to make the United States the target of its terrorism.

That was one of the principal international challenges of the last decade - and it's far more our misfortune than his that Bill Clinton didn't do more to meet it.

Rememberit!--and repeat it over and over every day .

The Monica thing consumed so much of his time because of the lying. If the jerk had just told the truth...

But the truth isn't in Bill Clinton.
